Basal rot is a devastating disease of onion caused by Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. cepae. Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. cepaeexcreted several extracellular pectinolytic and cellulolytic enzymes in the onion plants after infection. The production of polygalacturanase, pectin methyl esterase and pectin trans-eliminase increased in the onion plants infected with the pathogen. Histopathological changes occurred in onion due to infection of Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. cepae. Large numbers of small vacuoles were also observed in the cytoplasm. The xylem vessels were thickened and both proto and meta xylem plugged with mycelium. Infected onion bulbs showed disintegration of epidermal layer, cortex tissue and vascular bundle cells. Compared to healthy tissues of bulb, epidermal layer of infected bulbs were disrupted at several points. Keywords

Antifungal metabolites were isolated from Pseudomonas fluorescens and tested against Fusarium oxysporum f.sp. cepae causing basal rot of onion. Phenazine and 2,4 DAPG produced by the Pseudomonas isolate (Pf 12) were recorded 67.03 and 77.34 per cent inhibition of mycelial growth over control respectively. P. fluorescens isolates were strongly produced hydroxymate and Carboxymate type of siderophore at various level. Antifungal metabolites produced by Pseudomonas isolate (Pf 12) was recorded maximum inhibition of basal rot pathogen in in vitro condition. Keywords

Actinomycetes isolates were collected from different redgram growing areas of Tamil Nadu and they were tested for their antagonistic activity against Fusarium udum and Macrophomina phaseolina. Among the tested isolates of Actinomycetes AC (5) reported highest 82.85 per cent reduction of mycelial growth of Fusarium udum and 85.13 per cent reduction of mycelial growth of Macrophomina phaseolina under in vitro condition. Keywords
