A field experiment was conducted during Kharif 2009 and rabi 2009-10 at Maize Research Centre, Rajendranagar, Hyderabad with the maize hybrid (30V92) in Randomized Block Design with seven treatments for bio-efficacy i.e., coragen 30, 40, 50 and 60 g a.i/ha along with two standard checks, carbaryl 50 WP @ 700 g a.i/ha, endosulfan 35 EC @ 350 g a.i/ha and an untreated control against maize stem borers. Stem borer damage in terms of per cent infestation and per cent dead hearts in four dosages of coragen varied between 1.27 to 2.96 and 0.0 to 0.68 during Kharif, 1.06 to 5.60 and 0.0 to 4.31 during Rabi. The population of Coccinella spp. remained unaffected.Phytotoxicity symptoms were not noticed on maize crop. Keywords

A field experiment on seasonal incidence of stem borers in corn was conducted at Maize Research Centre, Rajendranagar, Hyderabad. Undertaking sowings at monthly intervals from Jan 2013 to Dec 2013 in an area of 150 m2 as a replicated trial. DHM 117 hybrid was sown in ridge and furrow method at 75x20 cm spacing. Random destructive sampling was done twice at 30 and 60 DAG @ 4 plants per replication to quantify the genera wise stem borer larval population and also stem tunneling. Observations on stem borer incidence and yield were recorded. Data was subjected to arcsine and square ischolar_main transformation and two way analysis was conducted. It is evident from the results that among the monthly sowings, September and February are subjected to severe stem borer attack, however, low yields are observed in summer. Hence, it is advisable to take up sowings in July during Kharif and in November during Rabi to obtain maximum yields with low stem borer incidence. Keywords

A field experiment was conducted during Rabi 2011-12 and Kharif 2012 at Maize Research Centre, Rajendranagar, Hyderabad with DHM 117 maize hybrid inRandomized Block Design with eight treatments for bio-efficacy of Virtako 1.5 G @ 4, 5, 6, 7 kg/ha against maize stem borer along with three standard checks, Chlorantriniliprole 0.4 G @10 kg/ha, Thiamethoxam 75 SG @ 0.125 kg/ha, carbofuran 3 G @ 33 kg/ha at 15-18 days after sowing and an untreated control. Two years pooled data shows that among all the treatments, Virtako 1.5 G @ 7 kg/ha followed by chlorantriniliprole and virtako 6 kg/ha were highly effective in reducing the stem borer damage with 3.98, 4.41, 4.78 per cent infestation and 1.99, 1.94, 2.57 per cent dead hearts, respectively compared to 11.19 per cent infestation and 5.64 per cent dead hearts in control. Virtako 1.5 G@ 7 kg/ ha and 6 kg/ha were effective in reducing the aphid population to 5.33 aphids/plant compared to 12.33 aphids/plant in control. The population of Coccinella spp. and spiders differed slightly among the treatments.Virtako did not cause any of the phytotoxic symptoms on maize even at the dosage of 12 kg/ha. Highest grain yield of 10.11 t/ha and 5.09 t/ha was obtained in the plots treated with Virtako @ 7 kg/ha as compared to 9.15 and 4.28 t/ha in control during Rabi and Kharif, respectively. Keywords

In the field experiments conducted during Kharif 2012 and Rabi 2012-13 at Maize Research Centre, Rajendranagar to find out an alternative to endosulfan which was recommended against stem borer in maize, insecticides were sprayed at the recommended dosages at 12 DAG and observations were recorded at 45DAG and subjected to RBD analysis after angular transformation. Mean infestation was observed to be the lowest in the plot treated with chlorantriniliprole 18.5 SC (1.28%) followed by £cyhalothrin 5CS (2.33%). Mean per cent deadhearts was lowest i.e., 0.41 in the £-cyhalothrin treated plot followed by 0.61 in Indoxacarb treatment. Keywords
