Abstract

Diabetic Meiiitus (DM) is a chronic disorder resuiting from a number of factors in which an absoiute or relative deficiency of insuiin or its function occurs. World Heaith Organization has reported that giobal prevalence of diabetes will increase more than double from 135 million to 300 million by 2025. India stands as the first in whole world to have the largest number of diabetes mainly Non Insulin Dependent Diabetes Meiiitus (NIDDM). Current estimate is about 19.4 million and will be greater than 57 million diabetes by 2025.

Abstract

The term stroke defines rapidly developing clinical symptoms and signs of focal loss of cerebral function lasting for more than 24 hours or leading to death with no apparent cause other than vascular origin. Stroke is the leading cause of mortality worldwide. Stroke occurs when the blood supply to the brain is suddenly interrupted due to a vascular cause.

Abstract

Diabetes mellitus increases the risk for coronary heart disease 2-4 times and atherosclerosis is rapidly progressive. Macrovascular complications are encountered more often in Type-II than in Type-I diabetes. The metabolic disorder might induce vascular lesions and cause haematological abnormalities resulting in tissue hypoxia including glycation of haemoglobin, reduced 2,3 DPG levels, increased platelet aggregation, increased synthesis of thrombogenic thromboxane A2 derivatives, reduced fibrinolytic activity, increased levels of coagulation factors V, VII and increased fibrinogen and Soluble Fibrin Monomer Complexes (SFMC). The net effect of all these changes is an increased blood viscosity, reduced blood flow and decreased delivery of oxygen to tissues ultimately leading to coronary thrombosis.
