Prevalence of obesity, aptly described as a genetic misfortune, has reached epidemic dimensions worldwide and is continuing to rise at an alarming rate even in developing countries where human hunger is the other side of the coin. It is estimated that more than 300 million people worldwide are obese. According to Koon prevalence rates of overweight and obesity in India are 12.8 and 10.3 per cent respectively. Diet, eating pattern, physical inactivity, sedentary lifestyles, environmental factors, alcohol consumption and psychological factors contribute to obesity. Anaemia is estimated to affect 3.5 billion individuals in the developing world and more than 320 million people in India with the highest prevalence among women and children (40 to 80 per cent pregnant women, 60 to 70 per cent children and 50 per cent adolescent girls)'. Improvement in supply and consumption of iron rich foods and enhancing the bioavailability of iron from foods are important strategies to improve the iron status of populations. In many parts of the developing world where a vegetarian diet is an economic necessity, non-haem iron is the most important source of dietary iron. Epidemiological studies have demonstrated significant relationships between serum vitamin A level and biochemical Indicators of Iron status. It is assumed that vitamin A is involved in the regulatoin of iron transport from the llver.
