Disturbances in carbohydrate metabolism caused by feeding high fat diet in animals are well known. Whitney and Roberts, and Samuel et al reported that rats maintained on a high fat diet generally have higher blood sugar levels than those on a high carbohydrate diet. Increased fasting glucose levels in men placed on a high fat diet have also been reported. Kowale et al have evidenced more deleterious effects on carbohydrate metabolism by feeding high saturated fat than high unsaturated fat to animals.- Effect of Rice Polishing Concentrate on the Nitrogen, Calcium and Phosphorus Metabolism of Albino Rats Kept on Rice and Jowar Diets

It has been reported by many investigators that poor vegetarian diets based on rice and jowar are deficient in protein, B-vitamins and minerals. The lysine and threonine are the limiting amino acids in rice while lysine, threonine, tryptophan and methionine are limiting in jowar.- The Influence of Different Fats on Various Factors Related to Atherosclerosis and Vascular Occlusion

Several reports have been made on the relationship of the fats and atherosclerosis. A series of studies emphasised the fact that severe atherosclerosis and coronary artery disease are prevalent among the people who consumed high percentage of saturated fats of animal origin whereas the vegetable oils did not cause harmful effects.- Effect of Different Dietary Fats on Carbohydrate Metabolism
