The study on the expenditure pattern is very important in any study related to poverty and standard of living. In India, the National sample survey of household consumer expenditure is the only source of information to study the indicators of human living standard called MPCE (monthly per capita consumer expenditure). For a household, MPCE is the household consumer expenditure over a period of 30 days divided by household size. In India the official estimates of the poverty line was defined based on the expenditure required to obtain 2400 Calories for the rural and 2100 Calories for the urban. The poverty line for the base year 1973-74 has been taken as per capita expenditure level of which these calorie norms are met.- Association between the Dietaries of Families and Family Members-A Case Study in Hyderabad

Dietaries of families are closely associated with the variations in family size, socio-economic status, season and age composition. Dietaries of family members have also been observed to vary with the variations in family size, age, sex, socio-economic status and season of study. There is hardly any study showing the positive or negative association between the dietaries of families and family members. A study was undertaken to assess whether there is any association between the dietaries of families and family members by age, sex and socio-economic status.- The Weighment and 24-Hours Oral Recall Questionnaire Methods of Dietary Survey - a Case Study with Models of Agreement

Studies pertaining to the agreement between two methods of diet survey (weighment&24-hours oral recall questionnaire) in terms of foods and nutrients in developed countries are plenty (Gersovitz, et al; Boureli, et al, Posner, et al, Crawford, et al). In developing countries the literature on this topic, is hardly available (Swaran Pasricha, 1959; Shanta Madhavan and Swaminathan6, 1966, Mujeeb-ur-Rahman and Visweswara Rao,2000).- Pattern of Food Consumption and Nutrient Adequacy - a Case Study of Adults by Religion

Socio-economic and demographic factors play an important role on the pattern of consumption of foods and nutrients. It is worthwhile to verify the factors associated with the variations in dietary pattern and adequacy. Studies on the association of literacy, income, age, sex and rural and urban areas with food consumption and nutrient intake of families of households are plenty.- Effect of Socio-Economic Status on Food Consumption Pattern and Nutrient Intakes of Adults-A Case Study in Hyderabad

Growth status of children (1-18 years) has been found influenced by season of birth, improvements of socio-economic status, maternal nutritional status and nutrient adequacies. In countries like Japan, generations of today are found taller and heavier than those of earlier generations. Americans of today are observed taller and heavier than those of earlier decades. Prevalence rates of overweight or obesity are found increasing with a higher level by age and sex. In India, children of all ages are observed to have varying heights and weights by variations in social and economic status. In some countries, children of all well-to-do communities are as tall and heavy as those of Harvard, NCHS and others in USA. Dietaries of well-to-do communities were also better in quality and quantity than those of poor income groups in many countries including India. It is of interest to quantify the variations in patterns of growth by age and sex and assess the differentials if any between children of Urban Hyderabad (India) and USA.- Diet Surveys by Weighment and 24-Hours Recall Oral Questionnaire Methods-A Case Study of Agreement

Methods used for carrying out diet surveys are varied. Weighment of the food items before consumption (prospective) and oral questionnaire to recall the food items consumed already (retrospective) are the well utilized methods of such surveys. There are many reports regarding the selection/choice, reference period and so on about these survey methods in India and the rest of the world. Very few studies are available in India about the agreement between these diet survey methods.- Variations in Dietary Pattern and Nutrient Intakes by Economic Status

Studies on quantification of variations in dietary pattern and adequacies are very few particularly in developing countries like India. Since, diet varies from country to country, state to state, region to region, community to community, individual to individual and also varies by social, economic, demographic status and seasons, diet has a far-reaching influence on health and nutritional status.- Weighment Method of Diet Survey - a Case Study of Reference Periods by Economic Status

The techniques commonly employed for undertaking diet surveys in families comprise of weighment and oral questionnaire (24 - hour recall) methods. The period covered for such surveys ranged from one random day to seven days. There are very few studies covering a period of one month. In various studies, different types of observations were reported in respect of the appropriateness of reference period for undertaking diet surveys amongst different types of groups of families and individuals, Chalmers etal.- Validity of Human Development Index

There are varieties of indices developed for grading the degree of human development. Human Development Index (HDI) is one among them generated by the United Nations. Human Development is a process of expanding human choices and enabling people to enjoy long, healthy and creative lives. The HDI is calculated based on three indicators, longevity, educational attainment and the real standard of living. Longevity is measured by the life expectancy at birth. Educational index is calculated as a combination of adult literacy (two thirds weight) and the combined first, second and third-level gross school enrolment ratio (one third weight). Standard of living, is measured by real Gross Domestic Product (GDP) per capita, converted into international dollars/purchasing power parity (ppp$).- Relative Utility of Various Anthropometric Indices for the Nutritional Assessment of Pregnant Women

Pregnant women constitute an important segment of population with higher nutrient requirements. Though extensive work has been carried out on various aspects of nutrition in pregnant women, there have been very few attempts to identify a best and suitable anthropometric index for the assessment of nutritional status. The need for this work was also made in the literature. In the present study, the relative utility of the following indices has been studied.- Nutritional Indices of Cereals - Principal Component Approach

Diet surveys constitute an essential part of any complete study of nutritional status of individuals or households, providing necessary information on food and nutrients intake level, food habits and so on. Although anthropometry and clinical indicators are more appropriate for measuring nutritional status, dietary survey is helpful to determine and evaluate intake levels of food and nutrients and special food practices, that is to assess what people eat qualitatively and quantitatively and find out the inadequacies in the existing dietary pattern and habits. Specially designed diet surveys throw up vital information about dietary practices during pregnancy and lactation.- Differentials of Malnutrition in Well-To-Do Adults and the Associated Factors

Though studies on health and nutritional status of children are available, work on adults is very limited. Studies in developed countries showed that prevalence rates of overweight or obesity are very high. Prevalence rates of undernutrition have been found to be high in adults of poor socioeconomic groups in countries like India. Also female adults were found more in number as anaemic or undernourished than male adults in poor income groups in India. In developed countries females have been with better expectation of life than males.- Growth and Development of Infants in Urban Slums of Hyderabad

Body weight has been used for a long time as an index of protein energy malnutrition. Attempts have been made to use arm or calf circumference and indices like weight for height (%) and weight/height' in place of body weight for evaluation of nutritional status, Some of the studies have shown that combination of height with weight for height or weight/height or circumference of arm or calf, would be better for assessment of various forms of clinical malnuturition and [growth retardation. Such studies on the children of Rajasthan and other northern parts of India have been very limited. In the present study using the data available on Rajasthani preschool children, an attempt has been made to assess whether a combination of anthropometric measurements or indices, is better for evaluation of various grades of undernutrition based on body weight.- Association of Growth Status and Mental Function in Pre-School Children

There have been several investigations to study the extent of growth retardation. Recently emphasis has been extended towards a new concept of functional significance of various grades of growth retardation. Among the functions studied, bactericidal activity was affected in children with 30 per cent deficit of body weight, while other immunological mechanisms like cell mediated immunity were intact at this level. These later functions were altered only when the body weight deficit was about 40 per cent i. e. when the growth retardation was very severed Intestinal absorption of xylose and fat also followed the same pattern.- Nutritional Status of Preschool Children and the Associated Factors

The majority of preschool children belonging to the poor income groups in developing countries suffer from various degrees of growth retardation due to nutritional deprivation. Malnutrition, the causative factor in the physical growth retardation, is a result of abnormal socioeconomic conditions. The result of several studies have shown that nonnutritional factors, prominent among them being socio-economic and cultural factors, age, sex and season, affect the nutritional status of children.- Fertility Pattern of Mothers in a Changing Rural Environment
