Jenu Kuruba, listed as one of the primitive tribal groups of Karnataka, mainly inhabit the districts of Mysore and Kodagu. The Kurubas of Karnataka are basically a forest dwelling tribe. They subsist partly on primitive agriculture and partly on forest produce. Tribal groups form an important segment of the Indian population, and the socio-economic status and cultural pattern of these tribes are known to vary considerably. While there is considerable data regarding the food habits and nutritional status of several urban and rural communities in our country such information on tribal population is scanty. This information is necessary in the formulation of programmes aimed at nutritional upliftment of these groups. Protein-calorie malnutrition is a problem of considerable public health importance among the pre-school children of the lower socio-economic groups, Someswara Rao et al and Pralhad Rao et al. Dietary surveys among these groups (Pralhad Rao et al) revealed that protein intake was adequate or marginal as compared to their requirements based on actual body weights.
