The Kanuri people today inhabit the North east corner of Nigeria on the interface between the Sahel and Sudan Savannahs. The existence of these people and their sovereign state on the southern rim of the Sahara desert was known to the muslim world, even outside Sudan by the end of the first millennium A.D. Kanuri legend trace the origins of their ancestors to Yemen although there are compelling ethno-linguistic reasons to indicate that their origins could have been the central Sahara.
