Abstract

A common welding joint is butt joint which will introduce (a) residual stresses (b) stress concentration and (c) distortion. All these factors will affect the strength of the joint. In this paper the effect of distortion and the way to take this into consideration in evaluating the fatigue strength are discussed.

Abstract

Many of the welded structures are of tubes, specially in off-shore applications. Such structures are often subjected to cyclic loads which have to be taken into account at the design stage. Some of the problems connected with the evaluation of fatigue life of tubular structures are discussed in this articles, taking the main body of the data from reports of Commission XIII of other centres.

Abstract

Welded joints are often subjected to fatigue type of loading which results in the initiation and propagation of a dominant crack. Thus characterization of crack growth behaviour in weld metal, heat affected zone and base metal is very important to evaluate the relative strength of the joint. The crack growth in weld metal is very much dependent on the residual stress pattern and so the fatigue strength of weldment may be inferior or superior to the base metal depending on the location of the defect and type of loading applied. These aspects of the problem are discussed in detail in the present paper.

Abstract

A weldability map has been developed for low alloy steels considering the role of carbon and the carbon equivalent of the alloying elements on hardness and hardenability. Contours of preheat temperatures are drawn based on the Seferian type of equation. On the basis of heat flow relations, heat input and the preheat temperature of the weld plate are related and trarisferred to the weldability map to include the heat input values and cooling time contours in the map.
