In today's highly competitive world every individual is keen on acquiring or continues to acquire such qualifications, certifications that will help him progress in his career, preferably, at a rapid phase. The term progress most of the time means higher emoluments, benefits, positions in the organisation etc. In order to achieve this, individuals keep looking at the industry trends, emerging opportunities, feedback from their friends etc. and take decisions as to how they should equip themselves to progress further in their career. Some individual don't hesitate to make even drastic changes in their field of activities to embrace new opportunities. In such a scenario where does welding stand? Does it offer a good career? Is it worth venturing in this field? What sort of personnel is required in this field? Is it an equally sought after field and if not why not? Is it a developing field or a field waiting to be written off? Is it a recent field or an ancient field of technology which has not developed over the ages? What type of job can it provide and what will be the type of environment in which we may be working? Does it provide opportunities for all engineering fields or only to a few? Is there any formal qualification, certification leading to specific jobs of it is a field full of self-formulated personnel? Where one can get details of the opportunities in this field? This paper tries to answer most of these questions and also discusses as to why welding can be an equally good career opportunity for many individuals.
Welding is an important and critical activity in many industries. Many surveys project a very good demand for qualified, certified welding personnel at various levels. This field so far has not been a favourite, preferred field for many especially the younger generation though it is on par with many other fields in terms of opportunities, emoluments etc. This is mainly because of the lack of complete information about the opportunities in this field and many misconceptions. The concerted efforts being made by several agencies should go a long way in removing these and it is hoped that the variety of training, education and certification programs presently in place for welding personnel at various levels should be able to generate sufficient number of welding personnel to meet the huge demands of the industries in India and abroad.

Delta ferrite in the austenitic stainless steel weld plays a dual role. On the one hand it affects the corrosion resistance and on the other helps in reducing the susceptibility of the weld to hot cracking. So controlling delta ferrite in austenitic stainless steel weldments has become one of the tricky problems faced both by the consumable manufacturers as well as fabricators. This is more so in the case of equipments subjected to severe corrosive service conditions like urea service where the presence of ferrite in excess of 2% leads to corrosive attack- In such cases special techniques and consumables are required to produce sound joints for satisfactory service performance.- Metallurgy for the Non-Metallurgist - 1998

At the outset, I don't know whether I am qualified to review this book. It is such an excellent work. But later I felt, I should describe the Book (not review) to Indian Welding fraternity so that every one can think of certainly reading the Book if not buying one for their reference collection.- Message

Dear Fellow members,
First of all let me wish all of you a very happy, prosperous, healthy and peaceful new year.
Every New Year brings in new hopes, challenges, and opportunities and along with that lot of excitement, satisfaction. The year 2011 is no exception to this. For IIW-India, this year is a very special and an important one. It is because in this year, we are going to organize, for the first time in the Indian Welding history, the Annual Assembly and the International Conference of the International Institute of Welding (IIW). This will be held on July 17-22 at Chennai. This is a very prestigious and annual event of the IIW and it is a golden opportunity for the Indian welding fraternity not only to showcase the developments and progress made in our country but also to learn from the experiences, research work of many renowned experts from across the world. There can be no two opinions on this.

Dear Member,
I am very happy to interact with you, through this column of IWJ, as the President of your institute. I am thankful to all of you for this honor and I will do my best to live up to your expectations.
Over the years, in India, welding, as a method for joining, repairing metals, has developed and has become the most widely used technique for these applications. Particularly in the recent years the developments have been at a very fast pace. The developments are not only in the variety materials that are being welded today but are also in the processes, the techniques, the procedures that are being employed today. Our industries have successfully welded some of the most advanced materials for critical applications in the most enviable manner meeting stringent quality requirements consistently. If you have attended any of our institute's seminars you would have amply realized this.

Dear Members,
Sharing the knowledge and experiences
I am happy to be in interaction with you once again through this column.
It is said that one can a get a deeper knowledge of a subject by teaching and by sharing the experience. Many may not get an opportunity to teach and teaching by itself is an art. But everyone can share his experience and through this process, gain a deeper understanding of the subject. To cite an example, if you observe the doctors, most of the time they will discuss among themselves the details of various case histories and even share opinions on what requires to be done in specific complications. Welding is also one such subject which, can be understood better by sharing the experiences.

Dear Members,
The art of conducting useful seminars
I am happy and glad to be in touch with you once again through this column. It is said that time and tide wait for none. Time keeps on ticking and events keep happening. This is quite true for the IIW-India as well. Very soon, we are going to organize the National Welding Meet (NWM) in Puducherry, which will be followed by the National Welding Seminar (NWS 2010) to be held at Visakhapatnam in December 2010. I am confident, both the events will be attended by many of you.

This is a unique book in the sense that its attempts to give an insight in to the materials that are used in army or defense applications. Rarely will you find a book like this which is totally devoted to this topic. The author has vast experience in Royal College of Military Sciences and he has brought out the same very interestingly in this book. As he himself writes this book is supposed to be informative and also entertaining rather than rigorously academic in its approach.

This is a unique book in the sense it is fully devoted to MIG welding only. As many of you are aware, MIG welding is being used increasingly in many applications. So a book fully devoted to this topic is probably the need of the hour.

To be precise this is not a book but a treatise on self-shielded arc welding (SSAW). The author is an authority on welding consumables, particularly welding fluxes. Therefore, I am not competent enough to review this book but however I would like to appraise the readers with the contents of this book briefly, so that any one who is interested in further details can go through the book in detail.
The author indicates that the purpose of this book is to put SSAW process on the map as a distinct process in its own right and this book is for a broad readership as it deals with various aspects of this topic.

Repair and rebuilding using welding Techniques has been an accepted practice in many industries, to improve the service life of components and to combat wear, because of its inherent advantages in many applications. An ever increasing number of components are being repaired, rebuilt using various welding techniques to achieve better service life and reduce down time. This has been made possible to a large extent by the developments in the welding field also, like development of new, improved welding consumables, processes, techniques to suit the variety of components, service conditions encountered, base materials and the typical deposition constraints of various industries, while manual electrodes still continue to be the favorites for many applications, the other processes like 5pen arc FCAW, FCAW with SA Flux nave also made in roads in several typical applications.- Book Review

As an industry, the automobile sector provides a very good scope for welding and related activities. Over the years, this industry has grown enormously and today in India we have a number of manufacturers, ancillary units and repair units which use welding extensively for their original equipment manufacturing and also for repair and reclamation activities. In the recent years this industry has been going through a boom period and also with the open Government policies, a number of new vehicles are being manufactured which has given a variety of opportunities for the welding industry.- Trends in Welding Qualification, Training and Certification

Welding is one of the oldest and most popular methods of joining materials. Over the years it has developed many folds in terms of technology because of which its use has spread to a number of critical applications in industries. This has led to an increased demand for appropriately qualified, trained and certified personnel to handle all welding related functions in industries. Today number of options are available in the welding field to get qualified, trained and certified. Though they were available earlier also, welding personnel as well as industries were not giving due attention. But with the increasing quality requirements both in terms of stringency and consistency, the benefits of having qualified, trained and certified personnel are being realised and many industries insist on recruiting and entrusting responsibilities to them only as far as possible. This paper highlights the present status, and future trends in these three areas, with particular reference to India. Keywords
