Conventional grinding fluid delivery techniques are found to be less effective in reducing heat generation. Consequently, thermal damages may occur in the grinding zone. In this paper, a comparative study has been made among three conditions, namely dry grinding, grinding with a thin layer of grease lapped on the work surface and grinding with minimum quantity lubrication (MQL), while grinding annealed AISI 4340 steel workpiece. In this regard, a new MQL set-up has been developed for dripping of bio-degradable soyabean oil through a nozzle onto the work surface. Remarkably better results are observed with grease as semi-solid lubricant, as well as with MQL technique, in comparison with dry grinding with respect to force requirement and surface roughness expectedly. Quite less amount of fluid is required in MQL technique apart from maintaining an eco-friendly environment, and hence, may be recommended for further use.Keywords

Polyester resins are unsaturated resins formed by the reaction of dibasic organic acids and polyhydric alcohols. Polyester resins are being used in different mechanical and other industrial or household items. It also helps making Fibreglass Reinforced Plastics (FRP). Grinding of this unsaturated polyester resin is often needed, and hence, suitable process conditions are to be chosen to achieve desired grindability. In the present paper, grinding performance of unsaturated polyester resin with or without applying grinding fluid using an alumina wheel has been explored. Experimental observation shows fairly good grindability of this resin with alumina grinding wheel under wet condition and with less in feed in dry condition.Keywords

In the present work, optimization of surface grinding parameters has been performed using analysis of variance. The process parameters under consideration in this study are infeed and environmental conditions i.e. dry and wet conditions with different concentrations of coolant that is used to reduce the amount of heat generated during the process, so as to keep the temperature produced at the wheel-work contact zone under control. A low alloy steel rectangular plate was considered for grinding. The response parameters selected are surface roughness (Ra) and grinding ratio. Nine sets of experiments were conducted on a surface grinding machine. The observed surface roughness (Ra) and the calculated grinding ratio were analyzed by ANOVA optimization tool using MINITAB software. The analysis shows that grinding environment has a more significant influence than infeed, on both roughness of the ground surface as well as on grinding ratio within the domain of experimental conditions.Keywords

Burr is a undesirable projected material adhered to an edge of a job. After drilling operation, exit burr which is usually produced beyond the rear surface of the workpiece, causes serious problem in the assembly of finished product and to maintain its quality. So, reduction of burr is essential. A number of experiments have been done in the present work under dry and wet environment to observe its effect on burr formation under different drilling conditions. In this work, an exit edge bevel of 31 degree or a back-up support is provided, and its influence on burr formed under different cutting velocities and feeds has been experimentally studied.Keywords

Slip-line field theory is generally applied for determination of plastic flow lines, stress, velocity of flow and plastic work. In this work, micro-indentation of a conical wedge into an infinitely long block has been analysed by numerical simulation of slip-line field equations. Though the previous works in this field considered straight line profile of the bulged material around the wedge, experimental results showed that the free surface of the material is not actually straight but curvilinear in shape. This work computes the slip line field considering the free surface separately as linear, or parabolic, or circular in nature. The combinations of linear and parabolic as well as linear and circular profiles are also studied. Results obtained in this work indicate suitability of the method showing good matching with the results reported in published literature.Keywords

Institute of Science, Education and Culture (ISEC) and Birla Industrial and Technological Museum (BITM) jointly organized a national seminar entitled “Application of Nano-Materials and Allied Fields” on 3rd September 2016 in the conference room of BITM. In the inaugural session, welcome address was delivered by Dr. Narayan Chandra Ghosh, the coordinator of the session. In his inaugural address Dr. E Islam, Director of BITM revisited the close relationship between ISEC and BITM in promoting integration of development activities, scientific consciousness and new paradigm of technology. In the introductory speech, on behalf of ISEC, its President, Prof. Anil Kumar Ghosh dwelt on the diversity of span of objectives and plurality of composition and tasks of ISEC. Then came the keynote address by Dr. Prabal Kumar Das, Retired Head, NOCCD, Central Glass and Ceramic Research Institute, Jadavpur. His discourse was on “Submicron level finishing of Silicon Nitride balls for bearing application”. ABC analysis is conventionally employed in industry to facilitate classification of different inventory items corresponding to a single criterion of annual consumption cost. In the present work, a different approach is resorted to for the analysis. 47 disposable items are tried to classify that are needed to undertake treatment of certain patients. These patients are treated in respiratory therapy unit of a hospital. Inventory management of these items are attempted using a multi-criteria decision making (MCDM) technique namely Multi-Objective Optimization on the basis of Ratio Analysis, or MOORA.Keywords

316 austenitic steel is used as cladding material widely. Cladding is a surfacing technique that not only provides good corrosion, erosion resistance properties, but also improves mechanical strength of the job surface. Gas metal arc welding is a semi-automatic, user friendly, economic process that is successfully employed for producing clad layer on a component. Quality of cladding depends upon weld bead geometry of clad layer which further depends upon heat input applied. In current experiment, three sets of heat inputs were chosen for single layer 50% overlapped (316) austenitic stainless steel cladding onto E350 low alloy steel by active metal gas welding. Torch travel speed was kept constant during the experiment. Total experiments were replicated twice for establishing better reliability of the result. Accelerated corrosion test was performed to determine the corrosion rate of the clad surface. Metallography test shows microstructure of clad portion that can justify the corrosion rate. Results show that corrosion rate increases with increase in heat input on the whole. Linear regression analysis is applied successfully to evaluate the relation between heat input and corrosion rate.Keywords

Burrs are formed in milling at the exit of the workpiece and it is three dimensional in nature. The exit burr height and thickness are varied with in-plane exit angle. It is also the prime factor of burr formation mechanism. This work presents a condition to obtain minimum burr formation at different exit edge bevel angles of the workpiece made of nickel chrome alloy steel with the varied in-plane exit angle of the cutter. In this experiment under dry environment, negligible burr is observed at 15° exit edge bevel angle when in-plane exit angle is 60°.

Threaded fastener is widely used in industrial and household applications. It retains good amount of tightening load and also offers easy assembling and disassembling. However, it can be loosened under vibration thereby causing fatal mishaps sometimes. In the present experimental investigation, a comparative study of the anti-loosening tendency of various high tension steel M14 threaded fasteners is evaluated on an indigenously made testing rig offering accelerated test facility. It is observed that the decrease in clamping force is the lowest after 12600 oscillations for nylon wrapped bolt. Hybrid double nut is found to show good resistance to loosening next to nylon wrapped bolt.

Components or structures that are continuously subjected to corrosive, or erosive environment, need repair or replacement at frequent intervals involving loss of time and money. To overcome this problem, components or structures can either be made of alloys with good corrosion or erosion resistant properties or they can be clad with these alloys up to a desired thickness. The first solution is found out to be costlier than the latter. In this experimental investigation, cladding of austenitic stainless steel (316) on low alloy steel flats is done under different parametric combinations. Metallographic study and corrosion tests are performed on the clad specimens. Corrosion tests performed on both dad and unclad portions show that corrosion pits on the surface of the clad portions are remarkably smaller and lesser than those on the surface of the unclad flats. At a weld voltage of 28 V, weld current of 145 A, and weld speed of 420.6 mm/min, with a heat input of 0.46 kJ/mm, corrosion rate is observed to be the minimum in the domain of experiments conducted, and hence, may be recommended.

Milling is one of the commonly used processes in machining industry. In this experimental work, slab milling operation has been performed on cast iron blocks to obtain suitable machining parameters in order to get low surface roughness, low vibration and high material removal rate. Experimental design has been considered according to the Taguchi’s L25 OA series. Taguchi’s signal to noise (S/N) ratio and composite desirability of response surface methodology (RSM) have been utilized to get optimum combination of machining parameters corresponding to low surface roughness, high material removal rate (MRR) and low vibration. Feed is found to have maximum influence on surface roughness, MRR and vibration within the domain of this experimental investigation.

The semi-apex angle of the wedge is varied from 10° to 80° with different friction conditions. The previous works of the present authors showed that the lip profiles of deformed material around the wedge are nonlinear in nature. The results obtained from the present analysis, showed that extend of plastic zones obtained by SLF with parabolic lip and FEA are very close. Hence, the original proposition of the previous works by present authors that the nature of lip profile is non-linear is again proved in this present work.Keywords

Thixocasting [1] and Rheocasting [2] are the two methods available at present to produce semi solid slurry. Rheocasting unlike thixocasting does not require reheating of billet and semi solid slurry is developed from the molten metal produced in a typical die casting furnace. Rheocasting improves microstructure of die cast Al alloys significantly [2,3,4]. In the present work, Rheocasting had been performed employing cooling slope casting technique. With the help of cooling slope spherical primary crystals are produced which leads to better non dendritic microstructure. This offers improved mechanical properties such as good surface finish, net shape and enhanced accuracy [2]. Extended Finite Element Method [5,6,7] is utilized to simulate crack propagation in rheocast alloys to analyse their failure behaviour. In this research work, micro scale crack propagation in the rheocast alloys has been investigated numerically considering tensile loading condition. In this study, XFEM is used to simulate micro scale crack propagation and to study the effects of crack growth on different phases in alloy without the need of remeshing[8].References

With the recent advancements in welding processes in industries, it has become increasingly necessary to develop suitable work parameters corresponding to the work material and process. This experimental work deals with the characterization of some parameters to obtain a desired weld bead by using a mixture of argon and carbon dioxide in a ratio of 3:1 at a much higher gas flow rate than used traditionally. Three uniform, partially penetrating, single pass beads are made on 25mm thick E250 semi-killed carbon alloy steel flats. The experimental results are then used to calculate the heat input during each pass to study the effect of net heat input on bead geometry. Finally the desired process parameters are evaluated to adopt.References

In drilling, the unwanted material adhered just beyond the hole produced in a workpiece material is known as a burr. In any conventional manufacturing process like drilling, milling, etc., machining burr is produced. There can be usually no conventional machining process which does not form burr. Presence of burr on the workpiece material leads to increasing production time as well as manufacturing cost. Minimization of burr height and thickness by changing machining process parameters and environmental condition yields decreasing production cost. The present work deals with prediction of burr height and burr thickness in the drilling process. An investigation has been performed by changing different process parameters like feed and cutting environment with respect to different drill diameters. From the experimental observation made by different sets of experiments with varying process parameters, minimum burr height and thickness are tried to find out. It is observed that using the back up support of the work material, burr height and thickness could be reduced remarkably. An Artificial Neural Network (ANN) model is developed using the experimental results. The neural network model estimates show close matching with the experimentally obtained results.Keywords

Artificial Neural Network (ANN) can be used for prediction utilizing some learning method. Gas metal arc welding (GMAW) was reported in a previous work to join SS304L stainless steel and EN8 mild steel plates. The experimental data obtained are used for training the ANN to enable it predict the output. ANN model is constructed to estimate ultimate tensile strength, elongation and hardness of the weld joint. A data set is tested through the modeled ANN to have satisfactory results. Quite close estimation of the ANN predicted values can be made with the observed ultimate tensile strength, elongation and hardness of the weld joint.Keywords

The Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) is a wide employed multi-criteria decision making (MCDM) tool to solve varying decision-making problems through the process of ranking. In the present work, appropriate selection of process parameters in Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW) of High-Carbon Steel flats is explored utilizing the AHP. Different sets of experimental runs being the alternatives, the AHP yields the best set of alternatives among them considering some criteria, thereby finding out appropriate set of process parameters to obtain sound welding.Keywords

An investigation on machinability study on hard grade AISI 4340 steel with carbide cutting tools during turning is reported in this paper. This steel is employed in military aircraft, automotive systems, forged hydraulic systems and other machine tools. TiC coated groove type SNMG 120408-PM and TiC coated plain SNMA 120408/315 K15 carbide inserts are used under dry condition at a constant depth of cut. Wear test is also done. Turning tests employing groove type insert give desired performance, eg. high material removal rate, low tool wear rate and broken chips at a feed above 0.1 mm/rev with no built-up edge formation.Keywords

Cutting tools had a vital role in the development of human civilization that dates back few thousand years. Pieces of stone, bone, etc. have played important role to serve variety of purposes as needed by primitive men in the Paleolithic and Neolithic Age. Later, tools made of bronze and different steels were employed. Ceramic cutting tools, coated tools, etc. are recent developments to have high production rate maintaining quality. In this article, a brief history of development of cutting tool is outlined. Also some works towards development of toughened alumina cutting tool inserts involved with this author are mentioned.Keywords

Usually bead-on-plate welding is performed to standardize process parameters before cladding. Selection of appropriate process parameters plays a vital role for achieving good weld bead geometry. In this experimental investigation, Metal Active Gas Welding is used with 316 austenitic stainless steel wire electrode. An experimental design for Response Surface Methodology named, Box-Behnken (Three Variable) design is adopted for determining the experimental runs. Heat input of 0.6kJ/mm and higher than this can be used to obtain desirable bead-on-plate welding that may also be recommended for weld cladding for this substrate-filler material combine.Keywords

The analytical hierarchy process or AHP is a useful decision-making tool, and it is applied in this work in resistance spot welding where two different types of triple thin sheets consisting of aluminium, galvanized iron and stainless steel are joined. Combining both the AHP and ANN, a hybrid network is developed to eliminate the complexity of the experimental results to predict. The AHP-ANN hybrid network successfully predicted output parameters with less error. Correlation coefficient has been more than 0.98 and the applicability of this method..Keywords

Setting appropriate machining parameters can give desired finish of a job. Selectionof such parameters needs time consuming and costly experimentation. In this work,
artificial neural networks (ANN) is used to predict roughness parameters of machined
surface to reduce time and cost involved for the experiments. Surface roughness
parameters assessed through ANN are compared with the observed data and an
accuracy of 95.5% is reported.

Here Analytical Hierarchical Process (AHP) was used for optimization of weld strength of Al-8%SiC composite using Pulsed Current Tungsten Inert Gas (PCTIG) welding. The experiment was designed using Taguchi L9 OA. The parameters used as criteria were pulse on time, pulse frequency, peak current, base current, peak temperature and cooling rate. The optimum condition were at peak current of 160A, base current of 60A, pulse on time of 50%, pulse frequency of 5Hz and optimum values of peak temperature and cooling rate were 446°C/s and 20°C/s respectively.Keywords

The AHP (Analytic Hierarchy Process) is used for multi-criteria decision-making. The present work reveals that the AHP can be successfully implemented for finding out incredible variables for determining the maximum depth of penetration as well as productivity in A-TIG welding. For fulfilment of the AHP model, three parameters i.e. heat input, weld speed and electrode gap, are taken as the criteria. The best discretion corresponding to the optimum process parameters is sorted out through the AHP which is an algorithm to achieve high penetration as well as productivity. Results obtained from the AHP model were found to be suited to the experimental one.Keywords

Conventionally, linear shape functions are used for two noded one dimensional elements. Determination of coefficients of a second degree polynomial are restricted to one dimensional two noded element as it requires more than two boundary conditions at each node. The present work introduces a new nonlinear trigonometric shape function to a one dimensional two noded element. Results with newly introduced shape function show better matching with exact solution to the specified solid mechanics problem.Keywords

This work describes application of multi criteria decision making tool for investigation of optimum welding process for Nodular Cast Iron. Factors like bending strength and tensile strength of the welded joint, workability, the efficiency of deposition and economic merit were considered for the selection of the welding process for ductile cast iron. The experimental data were taken from a previous literature. The experimental data and the data calculated from the mathematical model were compared. It was found out that the results obtained from the mathematical model were in good agreement with the experimental data.Keywords

This theoretical investigation has been performed to explore the dynamic performance characteristics of micropolar lubricated porous hydrodynamic journal bearing considering slip effect along tangential direction. The properties of finite porous hydrodynamic journal bearings and micropolar lubricant and the Beavers-Joseph slip model are combined to reestablish the modified Reynolds equation. Dynamic nature of the bearing can be obtained by implementation of the first order perturbation technique in bearing properties. This research work on micropolar lubricated porous hydrodynamic journal bearing in dynamic condition has produced superior linear stability as compared to lubrication using Newtonian fluid.Keywords
