Assessment of Agricultural Productivity in Kangshabati Irrigation Command Area (KICA), West Bengal

Indian agriculture is known for its diversity which is mainly the result of variations in resource endowments, climate, topography and historical, institutional and socio economic factors. As a consequence of the prevalent varied geomorphic, geohydrologic and socio-economic factors in Kangshabati Irrigation Command Area (KICA) of West Bengal, there exists variation in agricultural productivity and which leads to regional disparity. Identification of various levels of productivity helps to analyse the reasons for variation in performance and in developing location specific strategies for future growth and development. In the present work, agricultural productivity for each block of KICA was determined using a suitable acceptable method. To estimate the agricultural productivity of Kangshabati Irrigation Command Area (KICA), the total production of selected crops in each block, total production of the same crop at national scale (in the district), the total cropped area of the selected crop in each block and the total cropped area at district levels were taken into account. The study revealed the high productivity for Aman rice and low productivity for Till and Mustard in KICA.
