The irrational use of drugs is a worldwide problem affecting developed and developing countries. The misuse of drug especially antimicrobial agents is widely prevalent which has led to the development of resistant strains resulting in premature obliterations of highly efficacious and life saving antimicrobial agents.- Mesocephaly to Brachycephaly Shift as Seen in Punjabi Children

Anthropometric Parameters are useful tools in evaluating growth and development. Cephalic Index helps in estimation of intracranial volume in vivo & thus the brain growth. This prospective longitudinal study was initiated to compare the ethnic variations in cephalic index in specific defined ethnic groups of Punjab Jat Sikh and Bania infants.
It was observed that Jatsikh infants had a brachycephalic type of skull throughout the study whereas Bania infants displayed mesocephalic type of skull till 7th month of their lives and later on even they became brachycephalic in their skull shapes. It is apparent that the trend in replacing mesocephaly by brachycephaly in northern Indian children, wherein possibly Jatsikh children are ahead of Bania children in this process.

Insulin, Glibenclamide and Tolbutamide are some of the frequently used drugs for the most common metabolic disorders, diabetes mellitus. Along with hypoglycaemic drugs diabetic patient is exposed to variety of drugs. NSAIDs are one of the commonly used drugs in this metabolic syndrome. When a patient on hypoglycaemic drugs receives NSAIDs there are chances of drug interactions. This study was undertaken in the department of Pharmacology, GSVM medical college, Kanpur (UP) after approval by the institutional animal ethics committee to find out the interaction if any between Diclofenac and three hypoglycaemic drugs i.e. insulin, glibenclamide and tolbutamide.Young healthy rabbits were divided into six groups: five rabbits in each group. First group received Insulin 1 u/kg subcutaneously; second Glibenclamide 0.05 mg/kg orally; third Tolbutamide 40 mg/kg orally; fourth Diclofenac 1mg/kg orally and insulin 1mg/kg s.c. simultaneously; fifth glibenclamide 0.05mg/kg orally at 0 hour and diclofenac 1mg/kg orally at 2 hours and sixth tolbutamide 40mg/kg orally at 0 hour and diclofenac 1mg/kg orally at 2 hours. Blood samples were taken at 0, 1, 2, 4 and 6 hours for blood sugar estimation. Mean blood sugar levels reduced significantly from their fasting levels when insulin, glibenclamide and tolbutamide were administered. However blood sugar levels did not showed any significant changes when diclofenac was administered along with insulin, glibenclamide and tolbutamide in comparison to when insulin, glibenclamide and tolbutamide were given alone. The results showed that diclofenac does not interact with insulin, glibenclamide and tolbutamide on blood sugar levels in rabbits. No Abstract.

Male child preference is a well known phenomenon in Indian society. There are various drugs and techniques used to achieve this target, even though these are illegal and punishable. Women desirous of male child try to procure these drugs which are supposed to help in sex selection. These secretly procured drugs can cause congenital defects in the fetus due to the fact that these drugs are always administered during first trimester - the most vulnerable period for the fetus. There are many drugs, whose teratogenic potential is already known. But in the absence of enough data and lack of clinical trial studies in pregnant women, we don't really know about many drugs, which are necessary for various medical conditions during pregnancy. On top of that these so called sex selection drugs add to an unhealthy practice leading to many more probable congenital anomalies. It is the need of the hour that proper data is collected about all such drugs and their implications is studied on fetus. Due to secret prescriptions, it may be difficult to ban such drugs, but public awareness and health education about congenital anomalies caused by such drugs is probably the only way to fight this menace.- Effect of Antihypertensive Drugs on Quality of Life in Elderly Patients

The use of drugs to increase human happiness and to improve the quality of life physically, mentally and socioeconomically is a serious matter of concern. Chronic disabling conditions become common in old age and affect the quality of life. Quality of life (QOL) is an important measure of health care, which measures the gap between expectations and achievements. Effect of Drug use on quality of life in elderly Indian population with hypertension was studied using Mc Master Health Index. The study population was divided into test group (hypertensive patients on regular treatment) and control group (Not on any treatment or on treatment for less than 3 months). All three parameters of QOL namely physical, emotional and social were studied using Mc Master Health Index questionnaire. The results were statistically compared using ANOVA and chi square. Our results point toward better overall QOL in patients on regular treatment. Keywords

Anthropometric parameters serve as useful adjuncts to other observations in evaluating intrauterine as well as infantile growth and development. Determination of measurements with regard to Head Circumference of infants during first year of life is important for the assessment of physical growth. Range of anthropometric measurements in each parameter is different in different races. Earlier reported work indicates that socioeconomic and nutritional status affects the growth even within the ethnic groups. The present study is taken as a longitudinal study conducted periodically in infants (0-12 months) of two contrasting groups- Jat Sikh and Bania communities of Punjab belonging to similar socioeconomic status. Head circumference was measured with the help of measuring tape. Earlier studies indicated that racial factors of growth could be modified to some extent by improved socioeconomic status and nutrition. Since both groups compared in this study were belonging to similar socioeconomic status hence nutritional status of these groups was also similar. It was observed that Bania male as well as female infants had smaller head circumference as compared to their Jat Sikh counterparts. This change may be attributed to sedentary life style among the urban population. Keywords

Background:Maternal periodontal disease is a chronic oral infection with local and systemic inflammatory responses and may be associated with adverse pregnancy outcomes. Elevated levels of Creactive protein has been linked to adverse pregnancy outcomes in maternal periodontal disease. Objectives: To assess plasma C-reactive protein levels in pregnant women with chronic periodontitis and in periodontal health and to compare the incidence of preterm delivery in pregnant women having chronic periodontitis and in periodontal health.
Materials and Methods: A total of 122 pregnant women aged 18 years and above with gestational age < 26 weeks were recruited and divided into two equal groups (control group, study group) of 61 each. Blood samples were taken from both the groups to determine the serum C-reactive protein.
Results: The mean value of C-reactive protein levels in subjects having chronic periodontitis was higher compared to control group i.e., 2.462±0.318 compared to 1.307±0.361 (P < 0.001). The incidence of preterm delivery (<37 weeks) was 82% in the chronic periodontitis group (study group) compared to 3.3% in the control group (P < 0.001). The incidence of low birth weight (<2500g) was 45.9% in chronic periodontitis (study group) compared to 14.8% in the control group (p < 0.001).
Conclusion: The findings from the study suggest that periodontal disease in pregnant women is associated with increased C-reactive protein levels in pregnancy. Incidence of preterm delivery and low birth weight infants is higher in pregnant women with chronic periodontitis compared to healthy controls.
