Partition did not bring peace to the Indian subcontinent. The first war between India and Pakistan, also known as the First Kashmir War, occurred shortly after independence. It has its beginnings in October 1947, when the prince of Kashmir, Han Singh, reluctantly acceded his state to India as a result of the Pakistani-supported rebellion in the western part of his state.
