The Pong dam wetland is the largest man made wetland of district Kangra of Himachal Pradesh. This reservoir covers an area of 24,529 ha. The local people adjoining the Pong wetland exploit the wetland for food grain production and fishing. Thus, it provides significant role in their household system. The Department of Fisheries in Himachal Pradesh initiated commercial fishing soon after the emergence of the reservoir. Scanty attempts have been made in the past for estimation of economic benefits accrued from the wetland. The present study was carried out in Pong Dam wetland. The fishing households were randomly selected. The total cost of fish capture was INR 47,427 per fisherman. The fixed cost accounted for 14.44% of total cost. The total variable cost incurred on fishing was INR 40,579/fisherman/annum which accounted for 85.56% of the total cost. The gross income obtained by a fisherman from fishing was INR 96552 per annum. The net return over variable cost and total cost was positive indicating profitability of the fishing to the fishermen. The return on investment was 2.03. Season wise fish catch per fisherman was highest in winter (272.78 kg/fisherman) followed by rainy (163.24 kg/fisherman) and summer (137.61 kg/fisherman). The average production per day was about 2 kg per fisherman. The fishermen share in consumer's rupees was highest (75%) in winter. The per kg expenditure incurred by the contractor for marketing of fish was INR 11/kg. Since the fishing business is adopted by large population, therefore, the royalty and commission charged from the fishermen need to be reduced. The co-operative societies should provide facility of mechanized boating at subsidized rate to enhance the efficiency and income of the fishermen.Keywords

Chegu goats have immense utility in the pastoralist based livestock production system of the area and contribute to the subsistence of small holders. These goats are reared on grazing on common village grazing lands and arid pastures. The pashmina production and productivity has remained static since last so many decades. Therefore, study has been conducted under NAIP on socio economic and production parameters of pasmina goats rearing. The mortality rate of kids born per household from given goats was 27%. The production of wool has increased. About 100% of sample beneficiaries' goat keepers of kids shelters reported that there is improvement in mortality, body weight and safe to kids. The feed blocks and other feed supplements and improved grasses for plantation, etc helps to improve productivity and improvement of health of goats. The opinioned by the majority of the pashmina goat keepers about improved combs were better performance than traditional combs as most of the characters are in favour of improved combs. The per cent goats affected and mortality due to diseases was low due to disease management through drugs and vaccination. The pashmina goat keepers were also educated about goat rearing management practices through awareness camps and trainings. The results of above analysis indicate that the project has succeeded in creating awareness among the pashmina goat keepers about the management practices of pashmina goats rearing and improvement in different production parameters.Keywords

In Himachal Pradesh the contribution of animal husbandry to total agricultural output has increased steadily over the years. Animal husbandry is an effective instrument of social and economic change for improving the living standard and quality of life across all sections of society. Moreover, the livestock enterprise provides stability and economic viability to the farming system on sustainable basis. The study was carried out in Jaisinghpur tehsil of Kangra district. A sample of 60 households was drawn from six villages using proportional allocation method. In the study area the size of holding was 0.61ha. The total number of livestock in terms of standard animal units was 2.51.The cropping intensity was higher on marginal farms.The sample farmers met the fodder requirement from owned and common lands. The marketed surplus and home consumption were higher on marginal farms as compared to small farms.Net returns from cow over total cost were found to be negative (INR. -391) in case of marginal farms, while it was positive (Rs. 223) in variable cost.The net returns over variable and total cost were found to be positive in case of buffalo. The break-even quantity (BEQ) for buffalo was 1245.30 litre.Keywords
