In order to improve network performances in WMN, a reliable and efficient channel allocation is needed. This paper focus on solving the channel allocation problem with a Rate-Based Channel Assignment (RB-CA) protocol to alleviate performance anomaly by using multiple channels in WMNs. RB-CA exploits a new metric, called Prioritized Transmission Time (PTT) and Load Traffic Count (LTC) , in order to form High-rate Multi-channel Paths (HMPs). Extensive NS-2 simulations and experiments in a real test-bed can be used to evaluate the performance of RB-CA. The simulation and experimental results can show that RB-CA achieves improved performance in terms of aggregate throughput, end-to-end delay, and energy. Keywords

Wireless mesh networks (WMNs) have been attracting significant attention due to their promising technology. The WMN technology is becoming a major avenue for the fourth generation of wireless mobility. In a Wireless Mesh Network, Mesh Routers (MRs) are interconnected by wireless links and constitute a wireless backbone to provide ubiquitous high-speed Internet connectivity for mobile clients (MCs). The wireless backbone is tightly integrated with the Internet by some selected nodes called as Gateways. The gateway has more capabilities than a simple MR and is more expensive. In this paper, the performance of WMN is improved by an energy aware gateway selection mechanism where the gateway is selected based on the threshold energy. Here the gateway to which the mesh routers are connected keeps on changing depending on the energy level of the current gateway. The performance of WMN using the single gateway is compared with the energy aware gateway selection scheme using ns2 simulator and the energy aware gateway selection scheme is found to exhibit more performance than the normal single gateway WMN architecture. Keywords
