Wireless communications are turning out to be the principal mode of transferring information, and also it is becoming the significant research field. VANET is the method of constructing a strong Ad-Hoc network connecting mobile vehicles and each other, in addition, among mobile vehicles and roadside units. In this paper, proposed a solution to overcome the local maximum situation and reduce the bandwidth consumption. To avoid the local maximum situation the existing road topology is taken into consideration ahead of making any routing decisions. In order to route data packets between source and destination, two routes are maintained. If one route suffers from a local maxima situation, packets are delivered to the destination via an alternate route. To reduce the bandwidth consumption backoff mechanism is considered. The proposed routing protocol called “Enhanced Density-Aware Routing Using Backoff Mechanism (EDAR-BM)”. The performance of the proposed protocol has been studied using simulation programs and evaluated against the existing Density Aware Routing using Road Hierarchy and the results proved a superior performance.
