The present study analyses the influence of container size available during foraging on the demographic attributes of ladybird beetle Menochilus sexmaculatus (Fabricius; Coleoptera: Coccinellidae). To provide variations in the foraging arena, we used a small petri dish, large petri dish, and beaker as small, medium and large containers for foraging. Results revealed significant influence of container size on life attributes. Developmental attributes of M. sexmaculatus were better in the small arena followed by medium and large arenas. The highest mortality rate and maximum life expectancy were recorded in a large arena, followed by medium and small arenas. Reproductive attributes (fecundity and oviposition period) were much better in the large arena. The results of this study indicate that a small container encompassing small foraging arena is beneficial for immature development and survival, while a large container encompassing large foraging arena is best for the reproductive attributes of adults.Keywords

Oviposition is considered as one of the most critical events in the life cycle of phytophagous insects. The preference for a specific site for egg-laying depends not only on food availability and the presence of conspecific tracks, but also on the taxes, colour and curve of the surface of the oviposition site. The ovipositional behaviour of Zygogramma bicolorata Pallister in terms of geo- and phototaxis, colour and texture of substrates was examined. Negatively geotactic substrates were preferred by the insect for oviposition. However, there was no apparent preference for positively or negatively phototactic substrates. Studies on combination of taxes served to reinforce the results of taxes studied singly that the negatively geotactic response was most prominent. Feeding attributes of phytophagous insects are greatly influenced by abiotic and biotic factors. Therefore, we assessed the combined effect of temperature, age and sex on food consumption and utilization efficiencies of Zygogramma bicolorata Pallister. This Mexican beetle is known as one of the most promising candidates for the biocontrol of Parthenium hysterophorus Linnaeus, a noxious weed of barren, grazing and farming lands. Temperature, age and sex influenced food consumption, its utilization and ecological efficiencies of the beetle. Temperature between 27°C and 30°C was found optimal for 20-day-old adults of Z. bicolorata to convert and utilize the food biomass to body mass. Above and below the optimal temperature and age, the feeding attributes declined. Young females kept at 27°C consumed more food and laid more number of eggs compared to other females at different temperatures. This study reveals that females are more voracious feeders than the males regardless of temperature regimes. The present findings can be helpful to mass-multiply Z. bicolorata in the laboratory for the biocontrol of Parthenium weed in fields and agricultural farms. The results also suggest that global climate change may affect the biocontrol potential of the insect, but field investigations are needed to support the present findings.Keywords
