Abstract

The ongoing Quaternary period is marked by several glacial and interglacial cycles. These long and short-term variations are well preserved in the proxy record. Long-term proxy climate records provide a perfect setup to understand the response of earth towards these long and short-term variations in climate.

Abstract

The 25th Indian colloquium on micropalaeontology and stratigraphy was organized recently. The principal themes of the silver jubilee event were: recent developments in micropalaeontology; advances in micropalaeontological studies of Foraminifera, Radiolarians, Ostracods, Bryozoa, Calcareous Algae, Diatoms, Nannoplanktons, Dinoflagellates, palynological studies, geochemical studies of microfossils and their application in palaeoclimatology, palaeoceanography, palaeolimnology and tracing the history of marine and lake pollution; microfossils and Late Quaternary climate.

Abstract

To address the challenges and advancement in modern climate research, a workshop on the decadal climate variability and predictability (DCVP) was held recently. The main objective of this workshop was to integrate expert scientific opinion in making use of updated observational records and state-of-the-art coupled climate models to understand the slowdown in the rate of global surface temperature change since the late 1990s, and make timely progress to identify and address these climatic events.

Abstract

The third Neogene Climate Evolution in Eurasia (NECLIME) Asian meet aimed to reconstruct the palaeoclimate using a multiproxy approach, viz. megafossils (plants, vertebrates and invertebrates), microfossils (pollen-spores, phytoliths, diatoms, forams, nanofossils, etc.), isotopes, geological and geochemical signals. The meeting also provided an opportunity to enhance the database of low-latitudinal area of Eurasia, where monsoon pattern is considered as an important factor for floral and faunal evolution and their biodiversity. The major themes covered in the meeting included palaeobiogeography and biodiversity, climate and fauna, palaeoclimatic reconstruction as well as climate and vegetation dynamics of Neogene and Quaternary time.

Abstract

One-day seminar on the 'Contemporary ameliorations in the field of geochemistry, environmental and sedimentary geology' was organized recently at Department of Geology, Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), Aligarh. J. N. Goswami (formerly with Physical Research Laboratory, Ahmedabad) was the Chief Guest of the occasion. He delivered a keynote address on the formation and evolution of the solar system and its non-resemblance to any exo-solar system.
