Biocatalysis has made tremendous advances in the field of synthesis of industrially important products and intermediates. Cofactors are an important part of many enzymes which are involved in biocatalysis. These cofactors are expensive and stoichiometric additions are not economically feasible. This necessitates the in situ cofactor regeneration in biocatalytic processes. Various methods of regeneration of NAD(H)/NADP(H), an important class of cofactors, have been reviewed in this article. We discuss their salient features, suitability for current bioprocesses, drawbacks and scope of improvement.Keywords

'A country without science is like a car without an engine: it's not going anywhere', mentioned an editorial in Nature. To scientists this may sound obvious, but in today's world rational thinking matters less than ideology and prejudice. A significant part of the global population has little trust in the elite, and scientists as a social group are perceived thus. One reason for this may be the silence of the scientific community on the political economy of a world view that has brought the world to its present state. Contrary to the title of a much hyped book of the early 1990s, the disintegration of the former Soviet Union, did not result in the end of history. Nor did aggressive 'state capitalism' in China play a part. Rather, financial globalization and the myth of an all-knowing market economy got a huge fillip.Full Text

Chemistry, one of the main branches of natural science, has been called the ‘central science’. Whether or not it has ‘easily articulated grand challenges’, a question posed in Nature is an intriguing one1. Could it be that ‘easy articulation’, an advantage enjoyed by physics and biology, may actually mean more of packaging and less of substance? If so, then ethical advocacy of all science and not just chemistry must start with a look at funding of science.Full Text

A recent editorial in Nature1 urged scientists to rise above politics and restate their value to society. It is a suggestion that may work if what is of value could be agreed upon by scientists, their paymasters and ordinary citizens. Generating data or evidence-based knowledge is what scientists are supposed to do. That probably is the enduring value of science. However, to the two biggest paymasters of the scientific profession – Government and industry – that kind of value means little. Science that delivers technologies for war or profit, preferably both, is of value to them. To complicate matters, to an average citizen all data-based knowledge has now become a domain for ‘experts’. Consequently, when bad or bogus knowledge is touted as ‘scientific’ or ‘expert advice’, the value of all knowledge is undermined. Unfortunately, in the post-truth world ‘expert advice’ is often nothing but lies cloaked in bad or fraudulent statistical data. A closer examination of the ideology that drives this rampant misuse of data in the name of science is therefore necessary.Full Text
