In this note, I look into the record of a comet in the writings of an 18th century Indian historian Sayyid Muhammad 'Alī al-Husaini, that he says appeared in 1154 AH (1741-42). No astronomical detail of the observation is given. The circumstances suggest him to be an independent discoverer of the bright comet of 1742, now designated C/1742 C1.Full Text

In this study, I look into the writings of Ghulam Husain Jaunpurī (1790-1862), a well-known mathematician and communicator of modern astronomy in Persian in the early 19th century, probably the first Indian traditional astronomer on record to systematically make modern astronomical observations, namely those of a bright comet in 1825 with a sextant, and of Uranus, Ceres and Pallas in 1826 with a telescope.Full Text

Two celestial occurrences find place in the incidents related to the great poet - saint Guru Nanak (1469-1539 CE), founder of Sikhism, or in his teachings. The first one referred to as lamma tara (long star) figures in a hymn in the Sri Guru Granth Sahib and the other is a solar eclipse that occurred while Guru Nanak was visiting Kurukshetra. I conclude that the long star must be Halley's Comet in its apparition in 1531. This is significant considering that the record of sighting of a comet in an Indian scripture has so far not been identified. Further, among the many eclipses occurring during the relevant period of 1498-1521, that of 13 January 1507 is the most probable one. The eclipse is historical in the sense that it is the first observational record to be depicted in an Indian mural.Full Text
