Insect herbivores show dynamic interaction with their food plants in space and time. Intra-species variations in response to new environments, both biotic and abiotic, though well-known in allopatric and sympatric populations, were very little documented on closely related hosts. Two new host races of Aphis gossypii, a polyphagous aphid species of agriculture and horticulture importance, are reported from Tripura, northeast India. Natural populations of this aphid from two congeneric hosts, wild taro (Colocasia esculenta esculenta) and cultivated taro (Colocasia esculenta antiquorum), showed significant differences in life history traits. Aphids from wild taro clones were bigger in size, showed higher mean relative growth rate and intrinsic rate of increase, and produced more offspring per generation than those from cultivated taro clones which were smaller in size and took longer development and generation time. Reciprocal transfer of aphids between the two host plant subspecies significantly dwindled their colonization success rate in successive three generations on the transferred hosts. Results suggest that asexual lineages of aphids show adaptation to human-imposed selection pressure in the host environment.Keywords

Quantity of natural prey available to insect predators varies in time and space and it influences the fitness of individual predators. This was examined for Anisolemnia dilatata (Fab.) which is a specialist predator of woolly aphids of bamboo plants and sugarcanes, and endemic to south Asia and Asia-Pacific regions. Results of a laboratory study using 45 larvae and 10 adult females showed that individual A. dilatata larvae performed best at an optimal density of 250 live aphids per larva per day, and adult females from these larvae matured faster and produced higher number of viable eggs than the larvae that grew and developed at sub-optimal prey density of 200 or less aphids. About 73-80% of the larvae that survived at the density of 50 or 100 or 150 aphids per day took significantly longer time to complete development and to reach the age at maturity. Such females were significantly smaller in size and produced fewer viable eggs. Results showed that larvae and adults of A. dilatata required high density of aphid prey to support its optimal life history fitness. Results hold promise in the application of this predator in the control of waxy aphid pest of cultivated bamboos and sugarcanes.Keywords

Different phenotypes of the peach-potato aphid, Myzus persicae, with prominent differences in ecological and biological performances were identified on mustard, eggplants and potato plants in the agroecosystem of Tripura, north east India. Asexual clones of M. persicae on mustard plants were consistently light green in colour and their adults were heavier than the greenish yellow to light pink coloured aphids of this species that occurred on eggplants and potato plants in the same geographical area. Life history traits, like population growth rate, carrying capacity of respective plants, mean relative growth rate, intrinsic rate of increase and net reproductive rates differed between the three plant species. Differences in life history traits persisted in reciprocal host plant transfer experiments; aphid clones from mustard plants when transferred to eggplants and potato plants did not survive but those from the latter two plant species survived and colonized well on mustard plants. Results showed that M. persicae in the agro-ecosystem of Tripura consisted of at least two distinct phenotypes, the 'specialist' phenotypes from mustard plants and the 'generalist' phenotypes from eggplants and potato plants. These results may have significant implications for designing crop-specific measures for the management of M. persicae.Keywords
