Abstract

I am grateful for the many comments my colleagues have offered on my analysis of the Class Conflict in the Indian Society. It is customary to acknowledge such comments by means of a rejoinder. But, if I attempt to do it point by point, it will take far too much space. Moreover, it may take the argument away from the main focus of my analysis because, though a number of points raised in the comments deserve further discussion, in my opinion, they are not germane to the central theme of my Lecture.

Abstract

THE First, the Second and the Third Five Year Plans published by the Planning Commission in 1951, 1956 and 1961 respectively, each contains a chapter bearing on the subject of the rerganization of the production structure of agriculture. These chapters do not however hear the same title. In the First Five Year Plan, the chapter was entitled Reorganization of Agriculture. In the Second Plan, it was called Land reform and Agrarian Reorganization. In the Third Plan, its title Is simply Land Reform.

Abstract

The demand for a minimum support price for foodgrains comes from the producers of foodgrains. Naturally, in the minds of many, the demand for and the concept of minimum support price are closely associated with the notion of 'cost of production' of foodgrains. One of the reasons, possibly a minor one, for the failure to evolve a public policy and a programme in this field in the past has been the difficulty of knowing what the 'cost of production' meant in this context and an imperfect understanding of how it might be related, in concept and in operation, to a minimum support price.

Abstract

Though the writers have used a rather general title and have added a small part towards the end which may justify it, it is obvious that the study by Coale and Hoover is essentially what its sub-title indicates, namely, 'A Case Study of India's Prospects.' It is a serious study and bears the mark of careful and painstaking work throughout, and is an important addition to the literature on problems of Indian economic development.

An important finding of the All-India Rural Credit Survey which deserves greater attention, is that the farm business in India, generally speaking, depends to a considerable extent on the wages that the farm families earn by working outside their own farm business.
