Abstract

This study represents a modest attempt to examine to what extent the economic openness of India affected the purchasing power leakage from the Indian economy accurring through its economic transactions with the rest of the world. The study compares the experience of Indian economy during 1990s with that during the closed 1970s and the mildly liberal 1980s in respect of the net trade flows, net factor income flows and net capital account flows and a host of other related parameters. The conclusion emerging from the analysis is that there is continued net purchasing power leakage from the Indian economy in many years even during 1990s. However, the leakage is much moderated during 1990s mainly due to the increased net capital account flows. At the same time, 1990s also witnessed a worsening external debt service scenario. A comparative evaluation of the empirical results for different sub-periods reveals that the relationship of net trade ond net capital account flows with foreign exchange rate and other explanatory factors became weaker during 1990s. While this causes some surprise, this may also imply the need for making a more in-depth analysis, by incorporating several other factors, for explaining the various inflows of Indian economy during 1990s.

Abstract

Although conventionally 'organisation' has been considered a factor of production in economics, the economists have paid very little attention either to explaining the concept adequately or to evaluating precisely the crucial role of organisational efficiency. This neglect is possibly due to the various technical difficulties associated with its conceptualisation and measurement. In this backdrop, the present study aims at analysing the various conceptual and related aspects of organisational efficiency with a view to familiarise the readers with its intricacies; to emphasize its significance as the uitimate force behind a fiml's success; and there by, to bridge, to sollie extent, the information gap existing at present in this respect.

Abstract

This paper aims at evaluating the role of organisational efficiency in improving productivity, based on qualitiative, primary, firm-level data obtained from eight large scale manufacturing firms operating in different industries in India. The analysis shows that the effectiveness of organisational effort across firms is not proportional to their absolute organising effort and that the firms attain varying degrees of organisational efficiency irrespective of their type of ownership, private or public. Finally, the empirical evidence suggestS that it is the degree of organisational efficiency which matters first for improving productivity of firms and all other considerations, technological or others, automatically follow from it.
