Abstract
In the absence of reliable vital registration system, estimates of crude birth and death rates in India are inferred from population census data or from sample surveys. The current stress on family planning programme in the country, on the other hand, requires detailed measures of fertility like age specific fertility rates and parity specific fertility rates.
