In India the right of industrial workers to bonus originated in the voluntary payments made by some employers over and above wages on the occasion of big festivals or when they made huge profits. Since bonus was regarded an ex gratia payment and not an industrial claim of workers, the issue of bonus gave rise to many industrial disputes.
