A review of major studies on fertility concludes that it is only from the late 1960s that movement from the stage of uncontrolled fertility to the stage of uncontrolled fertility leading to the emergence of socio-economic differentials in fertility seems to have really gotten underway in India. This process appears to have been accelerated during the 1970s and 1980s. This indicates that the onset of fertility decline has began in India and the transition towards a regime of increasingly controlled fertility has been occuring at different rates among different socio-economic groups. These findings have important implications for population policies and programmes.- The Performance of Non-Governmental Organizations in Family Planning and MCH in Maharashtra State

This paper presents the findings of an evaluation study of three projects on family planning and health undertaken by three non-governmental Organisations (NGOs) in Maharashtra State, namely the National Integrated Medical Association at Malegaon in Nashik district, the Centre of Matru Mandir at Oni in Ratnagiri district and the Yusuf Meherally Centre at Tara in Raigad district. The study identifies various factors which determine the performance of a particular NGO and highlights how voluntary organizations, in general, can play a useful role for the promotion of family welfare and maternal and child health programmes in India.- Hindu-Muslim Differentials in Fertility and Population Growth in India: Role of Proximate Variables

Religious affiliation has been found to have a significant bearing on fertility in the study of differential fertility by various background variables. First, religion per se has considerable social relevance to fertility. According to Westoff (1959, p. 117), "The religious affiliation of the couple connotes a system of values which can affect family via several routes: (a) directly, by imposing sanctions on the practice of birth control of legitimizing the practice of less effective methods only, or; (b) indirectly, by indoctrinating its members with a moral and social philosophy of marriage and family which emphasises the virtues of reproduction".- Population Projections for Aurangabad Municipal Corporation, 1981-2001

India has the unique distinction of having been the first country to introduce an official programme for family planning in 1951 as an integral part of its socio-economic development plan. Since then the programme has grown steadily and today it is perhaps the second largest programme in the world, covering a huge population of about 70 crores. During its evolution, various strategies were developed for extending the reach and improving the performance of the programme.- Life Table for Ceylon 1963
