Abstract

The natural and anthropogenic processes like rapid industrialization, uncontrolled urbanization, careless mining activities etc. release varieties of particulates into environment which have different shape, size, life time and physicochemical characteristics. These modify and catalyze the course of a number of environmental processes resulting in secondary pollutants, capable of causing serious environmental hazards in biosphere. The catalytic ability of the particulates has been attributed to their active surfaces which stimulate the primary pollutants to undergo reactions resulting in secondary pollutants. The detrimental effects due to particulates and their reaction products are explained in terms of their toxicity and longer lifetime in the environment.

Abstract

A number of [arylidenamino]-1,3,4-thiadiazino[6,5b]indoles with nitro groups have been synthesized in their purest form starting from indole-2,3-dione and using ortho, meta and para nitro benzaldehyde. In order to increase the solubility of these compounds in polar medium, their inclusion complexes have been prepared with β-cyclodextrin. The formation of compounds and their inclusion complexes have been ascertained from elemental analysis and study of spectral characteristics. The stability of inclusion complexes is known from the study of thermodynamics parameters like change in free energy, change in enthalpy and change in entropy. The results clearly suggest existence of noncovalent intermolecular forces in between the guest compounds and host β-cyclodextrin during inclusion complex formation.

Abstract

Ozone, a potential oxidant has become the most important innovation for ultimate treatment of all types of organic / inorganic impurities in water and waste water by oxidation process. It can be safely and effectively used for the decolourization of effluents from pulp and paper industry. Kinetics of decolourization of post oxygen stage effluent of pulp and paper industry using bamboo and hardwood (20: 80) as furnish has been studied at temperature range 30- 50^oC using laboratory generated ozone. The ozonization reactions follow a first order disappearance of colour and the first order rate constant increases with increase in ozone concentration. An attempt has been made to study the impact of pH, temperature, catalyst and ionic strength on the kinetics of ozone induced decolourization of paper industry effluents.

Abstract

Both acridone and its semicarbazone derivative being insoluble in polar medium, may have poor pharmacological activity. To enhance bio-accessibility of these drugs, the inclusion complexes of acridone and its derivative have been prepared with β-cyclodextrin. The spectral characteristics (UV-Vis, FTIR) of these compounds have been studied with and without inclusion complex formation. The phase solubility studies reveal 1:1 stoichiometry between guest and host. The determination of thermodynamic stability constants indicates weak intermolecular forces between the compounds and β-cyclodextrin. The thermodynamic parameters ΔG, ΔH, ΔS of the complexes have been calculated, the values of which suggest that complex formation is spontaneous and exothermic in nature. The antimicrobial activity of acridone and its semicarbazone derivative along with their inclusion complexes against the microbes like Escherichia coli an, Pseudomonas aeruginosa have been studied.
