Abstract

The investigation entitled development of accessories from reusable knitwear waste was carried out in Ludhiana city. An interview schedule was prepared for the purpose of collection data from 90 respondents between the age group of 17-27 years selected through purposive random sampling technique from three colleges of Ludhiana city. The results of the study revealed that majority of the respondents were 17-22 years of age group and were higher secondary, belonging to nuclear families and had monthly family income ranged between Rs. 50,000-75,000. Seventy one per cent of the respondents were aware of accessories prepared from reusable knitwear waste and 53.33 per cent were interested to reuse the knitwear waste whereas, 65.56 per cent of the respondents preferred to buy accessories. Crocheted accessories were the most preferred accessories with two coloured combination followed by multi and three coloured combinations. Most of the fabric waste was collected from factories. On the basis of the preferences of respondents, two sketches of each accessory were developed through Corel Draw X4 and were shown to 15 panel of judges. After the selection of sketches the most preferred designs were developed. After this second interview schedule was prepared to study the preferences for the developed accessories. For this purpose same sample of ninety respondents were selected. All the accessories were highly appreciated on the basis of suitability of design, utility and overall impact. Majority of the respondents rated all the accessories as very good. The quoted prices of the accessories were found to be adequate and 11.00 to 81.92 per cent profit can be earned by making accessories.

Abstract

Living in a technologically developing society, our lifestyle and attitude have become self-oriented which has added to the menace of household pollution. Environmental awareness is needed to change the mindset of modern society and needs to provide some alternatives which can help the women to save the environment, children, family and society. There is a need to make the public aware about environment, the serious health hazards of environmental pollution and their rights to live in a clean and healthy environment. Study conducted on the awareness of rural and urban homemakers revealed that majority of the rural and urban respondents were aware of different causes of indoor pollution though the awareness was more in urban homemakers. Among the awareness of environmental causes maximum awareness was found to be 'dust in abundance' with mean score 2.73, followed by high humidity inside (2.63). Major chemical based factors reported was awareness of 'leaking gas pipes or gas cylinder' with mean score 2.68. Majority of the selected respondents (55.83%) were aware of the indoor pollution due to chocked pipes under the category of constructional faults and household articles. Damp and soiled bedding were placed at rank one with mean score 2.75. Other pollution creating causes categorized under 'miscellaneous causes' were: stagnated water, fungus and black mould, pet waste, animal dander, cockroaches, lizards, insects and spider's webs. Awareness of stagnated water was considered as one of the most polluting cause by 75.00 per cent respondents.

Abstract

The investigation entitled development of jewellery from solid waste was carried out in Ludhiana city. An interview schedule was employed to study the preferences of ninety respondents between the age group of 17-25 years, selected through purposive random sampling technique from three colleges of Ludhiana city. The results of the study revealed that majority of the respondents were students between age group of 17-21 and were higher secondary, belonging to nuclear families and had monthly family income ranging between Rs. 25,000-50,000. Majority of the respondents, i.e. 87.78 per cent were aware of jewellery developed from solid waste and 64.44 per cent were interested to reusing it. Whereas, 66.67 per cent of the respondents were interested in purchasing jewellery.Most of the solid waste was collected by the investigator. On the basis of the preferences of respondents, two jewellery miniatures of each waste were developed and were shown to panel of judges. On the basis of the judges preferences, the most preferred designs were used to develop the jewellery.

Abstract

The investigation entitled "Development of digital printed household linen inspired from art and craft of Gujarat" was carried out in Ludhiana city. Large number of motifs were considered from secondary sources such as books, research articles and internet from which twenty motifs were documented. By showing these motifs to the panel of twenty judges of College of Home Science, Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana, the six most preferred motifs were selected. Twelve designs were developed in two colour combinations and different placements in Corel Draw 13 were developed by using six selected motifs used for the development of final six digital printed household linen. Thus, these designs were then shown to twenty panel of judges for final selection of the six most preferred designs, their colour combinations and placements. An inventory was employed to study the preference of ninety respondents between the age group of 30-40 years, selected randomly from three localities of Ludhiana city. The results of the study revealed that majority of the respondents were between the age group of 30-35 and were graduate, belonging to nuclear families and had monthly family income ranging between Rs. 71,000-1,00,000. 58.89 per cent of the respondents were aware of art and craft of Gujarat. Majority of the respondents, i.e. 57.78 per cent were aware of digital printing techniques. Whereas 93.33 per cent were interested in purchasing digital printed household linen. Appearance was the most affecting factor for purchase of the developed digital printed household linen and colour combination was the most important attribute considered by the respondents regarding purchase of the developed digital printed household linen.
