Complexes of the type [ ML2 ] and [ MLL'.H2O ] [ where, M = Cu(II), Ni(II), Co(II), Zn(II) and Mn(II); HL = N-(2-thiazole)-2'-carboxylic acid; and L' = oxine] have been synthesized. The complexes are octahedral in nature. The synthesized ligand behaves as tridendate OON donor. The characterization of the complexes has been done on the basis of analytical, molar conductance, magnetic susceptibility, molecular weight, infrared and electronic spectral data. Antibacterial activity of these ligands and their metal complexes has been determined on gram-positive (Staphylococcus aureus) and gram-negative (Escherichia coli) bacteria at 37°C and antifungal activity has been determined on common fungi viz., Aspergillus niger, Aspergillus nidulense and Candida albicans at 28°C. It has been found that the biocidal activity of these ligands increases on being coordinated with suitable metal ion. Keywords

Diphenyl amine-2-mercapto-2'-carboxylic acid and its Cu(II), Ni(II), Co(II) and Zn(II) complexes have been synthesized and characterized by their elemental analyses, molecular weight determination, molar conductance, infrared and electronic spectra and magnetic measurements. In acute anti-inflammatory test Cu(II) complex was found to be more potent than Ibuprofen in normal and adrenalectomized rats but less effective in subacute and chronic anti-inflammatory tests. It inhibited PGE2 like substance ( 25%) and Castor oil induced diarrhoea (30%) but did not protect the mice against arachidonic acid induced mortality. However, it had very low degree of gastric irritation but without analgesic effect. Keywords

N-pyrimidino benzamide-2-carboxylic acid (NPBCA) has been synthesized. The structure of the synthesized compound has been established by using elemental analysis, molecular weight determination and infrared spectral studies. Antifungal activity of the compound has been screened on common fungi viz., Aspergillus niger, Aspergillus nidulense and Candida albicans at 28°C and antibacterial activity has been determined on gram-positive (Staphylococcus aureus) and gram-negative (Esherichia coli) bacteria at 37°C. The compound significantly inhibited 21.6 % carrageenan induced rat paw oedema at 100 mg/kg p.o. dose (LD50 > 400 mg/kg). It, however, fails to inhibit cotton pellet induced granuloma formation and oedema in adjuvant arthritis test (non established), upto a dose of 200 mg/kg p.o. It elicited ulcerogenic effect at 100 mg/kg dose. Keywords
