Abstract

This paper deals with the marketing approach of library and information services. Libraries have been considered essential to educational and research endeavors and have relied on instituitional financial support for their continuing operations. The 6Ps of marketing mix is place, product, price, process, promotion and person (Staff) have been discussed. This paper also focused on marketing strategies for special libraries. Practical solutions are provided on how to implement a marketing strategy in library and information centre. Marketing is necessary to introduce a new function, a new concept and new services and products.

Abstract

Scientometric approaches lead to trace the evolution of the discipline over time that marks the changes and cognitive shift within a discipline and topicality. Such assessments are on the way to become standard tools of evaluation and analysis in science policy decisions. This paper investigates the usage of bibliographic databases as tools of scientometric research, identify the problems encountered in using the bibliographic databases as tools of scientometric research, to discuss and describe the nature and extent of problems of the scientometric researchers is using the bibliographic databases and suggest measures to overcome and control the identified problems.

Abstract

The developments in ICT have affected every segments of society and all levels of education. Users need to acquire new sets of skills in order to utilize the resources at learning centres. They will have to be taught as to how to manage their learning process to an unprecedented degree. This paper gives the meaning of information literacy, needs and importance of information literacy programs, librarians role in the information literacy programmes and information literacy in Indian context. Suggests for information literacy plan for various communities to take India to Millennium 2020 and recommendations are made for the implementation of Information Literacy Program.

Secondly, the study extended to assess the user attitudes, their behavior towards the library services, their interaction with library staff and the problems identified by them. Abstract

This paper reveals the use pattern of information channels by the scientists of CECRI, Karaikudi and engineers of BHEL, Tiruchirappali, Tamil Nadu. The data analyzed from the questionnaires showed that most of the scientists and engineers make use of formal channels more frequently than informal channels. Scientists and engineers collected most of their information through printed media. Most of the scientists have contact with persons elsewhere in their own establishment (informal channel). Most of the scientists and engineers depend heavily on scientific periodicals (formal channel) for getting their information. 'While pursuing to learn a new field' is the occasion through which the engineers receive their information; whereas, most of the scientists receive their information through 'while searching specifically'. Both of them feel that all communication channels that they need should be available in the library. Most of the scientists and engineers agree that easy accessibility makes them to access a particular information source. Scientists do their work in central laboratories; whereas, engineers do their work in divisions. Engineers apply their collected information for development task; whereas, scientists use it for their research purpose. Though the collected information is applied to various tasks - the mode of acquisition of information by scientists and engineers is same. Engineers and scientists attended conferences less frequently. The channel, library bulletin, provides most of the information on what is published in their field for both scientists and engineers. Fifty percent of engineers and 33.3% of scientists make 5 to 10 visits to their library in a month. Engineers spend more than 20 minutes to scan various communication channels for a particular information; whereas, scientists spend more than 40 minutes for it.

Some inferences are also suggested based on the output of the analysis.
