Abstract

The article deliberates on the changing role of the librarians in the virtual/digital era. Electronic information creates challenges for the library community at its very foundation, moving it away from the traditional paper-and-print format to an ethereal world of circuits and connectivity. Now the concept of the library doesn‟t remain as a building or a physical repository that houses information. It has reached beyond the four walls of buildings. Librarians have a long history of adopting technology to enhance services. Librarians have changed themself from using early typewriters to the present internet. We are entering the virtual library phase and librarians have to use the changing technology to provide the best access and service to their patrons. Librarians are professionals trained in the acquisition, organization, retrieval, and dissemination of information. In essence, the practice of librarianship in the virtual library environment will not be very different from that in the traditional print-based library. Virtual library is not the ultimate answer to everyone's information needs. It is merely another step in a dynamic and evolutionary process. The traditional print library and its services will not disappear. Librarians must accept and adapt to the new techniques and systems. They must recognize the enormous potential of the virtual library, address the issues involved in its creation, and take a leadership role in integrating these new systems and services into libraries, for their own good and for the good of users.

Abstract

Information systems are changing the society. The ultimate scenario of the virtual society where all communication is electronic, and process such as tele-working, tele-learning and tele-conferencing or even video conference substitute the actual person to person contact, in which human beings satisfy their need for interaction with one another.

One of the clean realities is that online learning is an important and valuable new player in the educational world of todays.

Virtual references have strong base and they have the power to change the traditional library system. The virtual library, however, implies no physical location, whether for the end-user or the source. The men can access the information from anywhere and the information can be held anywhere.

One of the disadvantages of the virtual learning environment is the lack of face-to-face personal interaction which traditional educational contact promote, the virtual environment may not entirely replace traditional classrooms and teacher pupil contact.

Abstract

The study is indented to elicit opinions from the users of Internet Centre of University Library, Mysore, regarding the exploitation of Internet resources. A Questionnaire was used to make a survey of Internet facilities at the Internet Centre, University Library, Mysore. The analysis of the data thus covers "characteristics of study population, purposes of Internet use, most used Internet services, problems faced by the users while using the Internet services and suggestion made by the users for the future improvement of Internet services at Internet Centre, University Library- Mysore.

Abstract

The study aimed at finding the use of e-resources by the research scholars and faculty including guest faculty in the University of Mysore. 110 questionnaires distributed randomly and 82 filled-in questionnaires were received back with a moderate response rate 90%. The results show that e-resources are most important for scientific communication and research work. The library should also conduct brain storming workshop to help adapt to the new technology that often gets outdated.
