Abstract

Reviews the literature in LIS on the use of Internet resources and services in different settings in two sections viz: foreign and Indian literature. Concludes that despite the growth in the number of users the studies in LIS regarding the use of Internet resources and services in different settings are at their infancy.

Abstract

Reports the survey of five hundred and seventy one college libraries in Kamataka State with regard to classification of books, use of classification scheme, provision of book numbers, method used for providing book numbers, problems faced in classifying and the reasons for not classifying the books. It is found that three hundred and eighty-four of five hundred and seventy-one college libraries classify the books. DDC (209) and CC (140) are the schemes chiefly used. Book numbers are provided in two hundred and sixty-eight college libraries out of which one hundred and seventy-nine college libraries follow Ranganathan's book number. Inadequate staff (N= 216), inter-disciplinary nature of books (N=128) and identification of specific subjects (N=77) are the major problems in classifying the books. Inadequate staff (N=150). insufficient funds to purchase the classification schedules (N=77), lack of support from the authorities (N=39), and lack of interest (N=15) are the major reasons for not classifying the books. Concludes that unless the problems are solved or minimized it is difficult to expect the college librarians to classify the books.

Abstract

Reports the results of an exploratory study on the use of Internet resources and services in Gulbarga City based on the data collected from one hundred and twenty-three users of Internet in private and public sectors covering forty-seven from cyber cafes and seventy six users from university and college environment. All have computer knowledge; majority use computers at work place nearly all using Pentium systems and familiar with Windows 98 and MS Office. Majority of them are using Internet since last six months and half of them have an average ability; use twice a week; 1-3 hrs. per week and large majority use for communication purpose and followed by visit to websites. Most frequently used resources and tools of Internet are e-mail. web browser and search engines. Document file format is the most used. The subject areas of web sites visited are diverse. www.yahoo.com, www.rediff.com, www.usa..com and www.hotmail.com are most used websites. Most frequently used search engines are Yahoo, Rediff, MSN and Lycos. Majority prefers to read instantly on the monitor and search the net on their own. Seventy percent have not received any instructions in the use of Internet and felt the need for training. The charge for the use of Internet at cyber cafes is found to be costly: A large majority is not satisfied with the facilities available for surfing Internet in Gulbarga City. They are also confronted with difficulty of slow accessing. getting connection and lack of training in the use of Internet.

Abstract

The bibliometric analysis of 2475 Indian oceanographic research contributions and 38886 references cited by them was undertaken. The data was compiled using CDS/ISIS software. The analysis was carried out by developing CDS/ISIS Pascal programmes for oceanography as a single multidisciplinary subject as well as for each discipline in oceanography. Subject-wise distribution, forms of contributions and references cited, authorship pattern, non-texual characteristics were the parameters used for analysis. A shift in the number of contributions among the disciplines of oceanography, the forms of documents as the communication channel and even the items cited is noticed over a period of three decades. The increase in the number of scientists did not proportionately yield the number of contributions. Single authored contributions tend to decrease as in other disciplines. The number of Tables and Figures in contributions are yet to stabilise. The results could be applied in the development of information systems.
