The citation distribution always shows a highly skewed pattern to a very small number of core groups. This paper has proposed a fundamental formula to measure the change in relative fall in citation count with a corresponding change in the ranking of different kinds of cited items (author, journal, article, etc.). Two new indicators are mathematically developed here, the names given to which are, Relative Citation Fall (RCF) and Citation Fall Index (CFI). These indicators will be tested for different kinds of cited items in different subject domains to quantitatively measure citation skewness in future studies. Bidyarthi Dutta https://www.i-scholar.in/index.php/sjim/article/view/224355 Sat, 30 Dec 2023 00:00:00 +0000 Research Misconduct: A Comprehensive Examination of Retracted Publications in Biomedical Literature https://www.i-scholar.in/index.php/sjim/article/view/224356 The study aims to examine retracted articles in the biomedical literature and inspect the characteristics of retracted papers. The PubMed database was searched for retracted articles from 2012 to 2022. Four hundred twenty-one retracted articles were identified and used to examine retraction characteristics, publishers, the impact factor of retracted articles, and reasons for retraction. China published more than one-third of the retracted articles. Four authors wrote 16.86 per cent of the retracted papers. Springer has the highest retraction rate. The retraction rate has been increasing since 2012. Of 421, 364 (86.46 per cent) had an IF (Journal Citation Reports). Reasons for retraction include plagiarism, fake peer review, duplication of an article, concerns/issues about data/error in data, error in analyses, error in methods, notice-limited or no information lack of IRB/IACUC approval, concerns/issues about referencing/attributions, lack of approval from the third party, lack of approval from author and author withdrawn. These findings suggest a need for a strict and more deliberate role of editors, reviewers, institutions and governments to emphasize the importance of avoiding research wrongdoing. This study reflects the erroneous mistakes made by the academic community to get their work published. Somipam R. Hence, editorship and editorial positions in scholarly journals is a prestigious and rewarding activity for scientists. Physics as a branch of science is no exception to this. The present work endeavoured to look at the situation of Indian physicists’ (with Indian affiliations) representation in the top-ranking physics and astronomy journals as per the Scimago Journal and Country Ranking. Spatio-temporal analysis was undertaken to understand India’s position concerning the other established science research countries like the USA, China, Germany and the UK. It shows that the presence of Indian physicists in these quality journals’ editorship or editorial board membership positions is minimal. Some areas of physics are not represented at all. It may be added that more such positions for Indian physicists in these journals may bring more prestige for them and the country as a whole. The selected Google Scholar profiles were analysed to reveal the misrepresentation of the citation counts based on the wrong indexing of author names. A total of 30 top prolific author profiles from Library and Information Science professionals were selected for this study. The publication and biographical data were gathered from Google Scholar and compared with Web of Science and Scopus to avoid ambiguity. The findings reveal that misrepresenting citations to the author profiles due to the wrong indexing of author names leads to an increased citation count and affects the resultant author ranking. Nadim Akhtar Khan, Ajra Bhat https://www.i-scholar.in/index.php/sjim/article/view/224358 Sat, 30 Dec 2023 00:00:00 +0000 Attention Literacy in the Age of Information Abundance https://www.i-scholar.in/index.php/sjim/article/view/224359 Information fatigue syndrome is a very common disorder presently for individuals who have to crawl a huge number of sources to get their required information due to information explosion or ‘info-pollution’ which is to be understood as a state where a person gets baffled and becomes unable to form appropriate decisions with too much information. Research in psychology, cognitive science, and neurosciences confirm that the biological limitations of human beings restrict a person from paying attention to several objects simultaneously. The present study is an endeavour to examine this issue through suggestive measures to decipher the various aspects of human attention. Document analysis technique has been adopted to show that only information literacy is not enough for the library and information science professionals to sustain in the attention economy; instead, attention literacy and fruitful application of different aspects of attention are very much essential too. The existing discourses of library and information science lack the notion that a shift of focus from information literacy to attention literacy has become necessary of late. The present study fills this knowledge gap and makes some recommendations regarding the fruitful application of attention literacy in different activities of libraries and information centres to sustain the attention of the users. KM is instrumental in achieving organizational goals. Various companies now considering implementing KM software. This paper discusses and compares select companies like Ford, Amazon, World Bank, GE and Pratt and Whitney. The researcher used the Balanced Score Card Framework to compare organizational performance. The research is based on secondary data. It seeks to ascertain the level to which KM tools are being implemented in select organisations. Second, the study aims to study the impact of the degree of application of these technologies on the overall performance of the company in question. It has been identified that the total application of knowledge management technologies in case organizations has helped them achieve organizational success. Even though organizations implemented the internet to a high degree and intranets, decision support systems and e-learning to a reasonable level, some case companies are lagging in the implementation of other tools. Consequently, sharing of data is becoming a more crucial aspect of fostering open science and reproducible research. The practice of research data sharing not only enables transparency in research and collaboration but also allows other researchers to build upon existing work to reproduce research, accelerating the pace of scientific discovery. Various research data repositories have emerged to facilitate this process, providing a platform for researchers to deposit and access research data. And, research data repositories, specifically generalist research data repositories, have become vital platforms facilitating the storage, management, and sharing of research data across various disciplines. One such prominent research data repository is the Open Science Framework (OSF), which has gained prominence as a powerful and versatile platform for its comprehensive set of features and commitment to open science and collaborative research practices. This article examines the concept of research data repositories and their features and functions. Further, it sheds light on the NIH’s GREI initiative and the role of Generalist Research Data Repositories (GRDR) and explores the Open Science Framework (OSF) with its key features and advantages with an emphasis on reproducible research and data sharing.
