Abstract

Lannea coromandelica is one of plant dispersed in Sulawesi. Inhabitants from the Southeast Sulawesi apply Lannea coromandelica Bark to relief symptom of gastritis or peptic ulcer. Phenolic compounds of Lannea coromandelica Stem bark contains antioxidant activity. The study investigated the gastroprotective effect of Lannea coromandelica stem bark. Ethanol extract of Lannea coromandelica Stem bark (LCSB) was evaluated its anti-ulcer activity using aspirin-induced rats. Normal group was given 0.05% Na CMC. Positive group was given sucralfat 360 mg / kgBW and aspirin 600mg/kg BW, group I was given extract of LCSB at dose 400 mg / kgBW and aspirin 600 mg/kgBW, group II was given extract of LCSB at dose 800 mg / kg BW and aspirin 600 mg/kgBW, and group III was given extract of LCSB at dose 1200 mg / kg BW and aspirin 600 mg/kg BW. Extract of LCSB was administered orally in various doses for three days prior to the ulcer induction. On the 4^th-day rats, all rats were observed 8 hours after aspirin induction to determine ulcer index and percent inhibition. Results of this study revealed that LCSB extract significantly reduced the ulcer index and percent inhibition (p=0.00). Extract of LCSB shows gastroprotective activities.

Abstract

Last several years, researches about the plant as an alternative treatment of breast cancer have been developed. Curcuma aureginosa has been applied empirically as a breast cancer treatment and provide a satisfying result. The aim of this study is to examine cytotoxic activity of C.aureginosa extract to MCF-7 breast cancer cells, phytochemical analysis, and standardization of extract. Examination of breast cancer activity conducted by MTT method, extract was examined at concentration of 2000, 1000, 500, 250, 125, 62.5, 32.25, 15.625, and 7.8125 μg/ml, doxorubicin 1 μg/ml is applied as a positive control. Phytochemical Analysis conducted by GC-MS, and standardization of extract conducted based on Indonesia Pharmacopeia. The results reveal that extract has cytotoxic activity toward MCF-7 breast cancer cell. Concentration of 2000, 1000, 500, 250μg/ml has similar activity with doxorubicin 1 μg/ml. IC50 value of the extract is 76.24 μg/ml with 48 hours incubation. Standardization result determines extract profile and completes the standard of Indonesia Pharmacopeia. Phytochemical analysis result reveals Germacra-1(10), 4-diene-12-oic acid 6 alpha hydroxy gamma lactone (25.12%) and Cycloisolongifolene, 8, 9-dehydro-9-formyl- (21.61%) as a major compound. Cycloisolongifolene, 8, 9-dehydro-9-formyl-, Alpha-Humulene, Curcumene, and Curzerene assumed as cytotoxic toward MCF-7 breast cancer cell.

Abstract

Diabetes mellitus threat in the middle of the society has become a scare disease because in each 10 seconds in the world people die because the complication of that disease. The application of natural drug has been applied empirically by the society, such as the application of the extract of garlic peel and onion peel each has been reported has hypoglycemic effect and potential as an antioxidant which can repair damage cell body, include pancreas. The aim of this study is to understand the effect of the combination of garlic peel extract and onion peel extract to the decreasing of blood glucose level in normal rats compare to the combination of metformin and glibenclamide and to the decreasing of blood glucose level in rats induces diabetic drug compare to pen insulin. This laboratory experimental study aims to understand the anti-diabetic effect of the combination of garlic (Allium sativum) peel extract and onion (Allium cepa) peel extract in rats induced glucose per orally and alloxan. Test of anti-diabetic effect, test animals are divided into 7 group, 3 groups to oral glucose tolerance test in normal rats (negative control, positive control, and extract combination) and 4 groups to test in rats induced diabetes (negative control, positive control, diabetic control, and combination extract). The result of oral glucose tolerance test to the normal groups reveal that the combination of this extract significantly decrease blood glucose level compare to the negative control group specifically in the 0, 30^th, 60^th, and 90^th minutes (p<0.05). In the test to the diabetic induces rats reveal that the combination of this extract also significantly decrease the blood glucose level compare to diabetic group (p<0.05), meanwhile the result is not real difference to the positive control group (p>0.05). This study shows that the combination of peel garlic extract and onion peel extract have the ability to decrease the blood glucose level both in normal rats induced glucose and rats induced diabetic.

Abstract

Depression is a common disease that affects more than 300 million people of all ages which is generally accompanied by insomnia. In 2030 this disease is thought to be the biggest contributor to the burden of the disease worldwide. Mustard is one of the vegetables produced in Southeast Sulawesi, especially in the Wua-wua area, Kendari, where its use as a medicine is still lacking. This study aims to test the antidepressant activity of mustard leaf extract, and identify the class of extract chemical compounds. The long-term goal of this research is the manufacture of herbal preparations for either herbal or standardized herbs for the treatment of depression. Mustard leaf extract obtained from maceration contains flavonoids, saponins, sterols/triterpenoids, and terpenes. The testing of activities with the Open field test method, Forced swim test, and Tail suspension test of mice were carried out at several test doses (100 mg/kg bw, 200 mg/kg bw, and 400 mg/kg bw). The test results obtained was analyzed by One-way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) (SPSS 16.0 program) indicating that the antidepressant effect shown in the extract dose of 100 mg/kg bw and 200 mg/kg bw.
