This review is a compilation of a number of preclinical studies of the natural products for their biological activities. Many natural products studied for their biological activities are either in the form of herbal formulations or plant extracts. They showed antihypertensive, antilipidemic, antidiabetic, antioxidant, antianxiety, hepatoprotective, and many other activities. Many post graduate and doctoral students took part in studying the biological activities of these natural products. This comprehensive review will give an impetus for young research workers to explore the possibility of more biological activities on these natural products for the future studies to combat diseases. Keywords

The ethanol extract of Banaba (Lagerstroemia speciosa L.) leaves, was investigated for their effects on ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury induced by occlusion of the left descending coronary artery (LCA) for 1 h, followed by re-opening again for 1 h. Banaba ethanol extract (100 mg/kg) intraperitonially (i.p.) was administered 30 min after induction of ischemia. During I/R period, the hemodynamics and ECG parameters were measured. Oxidative stress markers like reduced glutathione (GSH), Superoxide dismutase (SOD), malondialdehyde (MDA), activities of myeloperoxidase (MPO), creatine kinase (CK) and myocardial infarct area were significantly (P<0.05) reduced in Wistar rats after Banaba treatment. The apoptotic activity and histological observations were influenced by Banaba. The cardioprotective effect of Banaba could be attributed to its ability to improve the antioxidant mechanism, anti-inflammatory and anti-apoptotic activity in ischemic animals. Keywords

An aqueous extract of Ocimum sanctum (Tulsi) and Elettaria cardamomum (Cardamom) was administered to elderly subjects suffering from depression living in selected old age home. Geriatric Depression Assessment Scale was used to assess the level of depression; based on the scale, 40 subjects were selected for the study. The subjects were divided into two groups of twenty each. Experimental group received aqueous extracts of Ocimum sanctum and cardamom for eight weeks, similarly, control group received aqueous extract of green tea leaves. Post assessment was done after eight weeks of treatment in both the control and experimental groups. Aqueous extracts of Ocimum sanctum and cardamom were found to have a significant anti depressive effect on experimental group after 8 weeks, while control group did not show any significant change. Preliminary data of the study showed a significant antidepressive activity of Ocimum sanctum and cardamom extracts. Keywords

Among the neurodegenerative disorders, Alzheimer’s disease is the most common type where the individual suffers from dementia. It usually affects citizens aged 65 and above. Its high prevalence and debilitating effects call for the need of effective therapeutic interventions to deal with this grave disease. The inefficiency of currently available therapeutic options pushes our attention towards finding effective alternative therapeutic options to either successfully prevent or treat AD. Herbal remedies are a potential gold mine that offer hope against this crippling disease. The aim of this review is to throw a light on the potential of a few potential and promising herbal which can provide an alternative therapeutic intervention for the prevention and management of AD amongst a plethora of herbal drugs. Keywords

This review is the compilation of some of the natural products which are effective in treating diabetes, lipid abnormalities and cardiovascular diseases. We also discussed metabolic disorder associated with antipsychotic drugs. Currently, there are no equivocal evidence to demonstrate the effectiveness of herbal drugs in treating metabolic disorders induced by antipsychotic drugs. Therefore, there is a need of extensive research work to be carried out to explore the possibilities of therapeutic intervention of herbal drugs in antipsychotics induced metabolic disorders.

Peptic ulcer is a disorder that commonly has an effect on the digestive system. It is a chronic illness which has impact on approximately, 10% of the mankind. The majority of current therapy regimens are based on western medicine. Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) and histamine-2 (H2) receptor antagonists, which are commonly used to treat peptic ulcers, have been linked to side effects, relapses, and drug interactions. However, several investigations have shown that herbal medications can efficiently heal stomach ulcers in humans and animals using different processes. As a result, this review will focus on common plants with medicinal value which can be utilized to cure or prevent peptic ulcers.

Flavonoids are a sort of natural substance which are basically plant secondary metabolites having a polyphenolic structure present in a wide range of food products. Flavonoids have become a vital constituent in nutraceutical, pharmacological, therapeutic, and cosmetic fields. This is owing to their capability to regulate essential cellular enzyme activity along with anti-cancer, anti-oxidative, anti-mutagenic, and anti-inflammatory effects. Through the revelation of a minimal cardiovascular death rate and the deterrence of CHD, research on flavonoids has gotten a boost. The functional mechanisms of flavonoids are still not completely known. Molecular docking and bioinformatics information are also been used to forecast potential flavonoid functions. Flavonoids are divided into several categories. Catechins and Theaflavins (TF’s) are two types of flavonoids that have been discussed in this review. ROS scavenging property of tea catechins and polyphenols have been demonstrated in vitro, and they may also serve as indirect antioxidants via their influence on transcription features and enzyme actions. There are a number of antioxidant polyphenols called collectively as “theaflavins” that are produced during the enzymatic oxidation (sometimes referred to mistakenly as “fermentation”) of black tea leaves by flavan-3-ol condensation Theaflavin-3-gallate, theaflavin-3’-gallate, and theaflavin-3-3’-digallate are the major theaflavins.

Diabetes is one of the main disease having many repercussions due to which there is a huge economic burden globally. Therefore, there is a need of good therapeutic intervention by using some nutraceuticals to combat this dreadful disease especially complications such as diabetic neuropathy where patients suffer from severe pain and disability. Therefore, nutraceuticals like coenzyme Q10 and metformin were used in this study to see how they are effective in alleviating the symptoms of diabetic peripheral neuropathy. The animal experiments were conducted to induce neuropathy by using streptozotocin-nicotinamide. Animals were divided into five groups such as control, diabetic control, coenzyme Q10, metformin, and their combination. The nerve function test was conducted by using paw withdrawal response, tail-flick response, and muscular grip strength. Antioxidant parameters were assessed by estimating such MDA, SOD, and GSH. The sciatica nerve was isolated and a histopathological examination was conducted. Neuropathy was assessed in diabetic control animals which showed a substantial decrease in grip strength, increase in the paw withdrawal, and tail-flick response. It was found that there was a rapid improvement in nerve function test when a combination of coenzyme Q10 and metformin was given together as compared to animals given coenzyme Q10 and metformin alone. From this study, it is shown that combination therapy exhibited a better improvement in the nerve function test and control of the free radical generation which ultimately results in nerve damage.

The prevalence of non-communicable diseases has been on the rise in the last 2 decades. Amongst which, cancer bags the top spot for being unforgivingly ruthless and is the leading cause of the incessant rise in fatalities globally. The failure of current therapeutic approaches is subject to multiple factors. One of them is their inability to effectively contain or kill cancerous cells that persist. Their unbiased nature, due to which they kill healthy as well as cancerous cells, is one of the biggest drawbacks of the currently available therapeutic options. Recent advances have made targeted therapy a possibility but its high cost renders it an unviable option for a large portion of the affected population. The above mentioned drawbacks of the currently used treatments push our attention towards finding better alternatives to effectively deal with this pestilent disease. Herbal drugs offer tremendous hope and are a potential gold mine that could provide effective treatment options to deal with cancer. In this review, we shed light on a few encouraging herbs like Withania somnifera, Astragalus membranaceus, Zingiber officinale, Thea sinensis, Panax ginseng, Hypericum perforatum, Allium cepa and Allium sativum that hold the potential to provide effective alternative therapeutic interventions for the prevention and management of cancer. Keywords

The medical disorder known as hyperlipidemia is characterized by unusually high amount of lipids in the blood (fatty substances). This illness is also associated with being overweight. Even though hypolipidemic drugs are commonly used to treat cardiovascular diseases and stroke, there is a possibility that they may cause undesirable side effects. Many different medicinal plants have been successfully utilized in the treatment of various conditions in India. The treatment of hyperlipidemia was the primary focus of this investigation into the therapeutic properties of a variety of plants. Keywords

Herbal remedies, often known as herbal medicine or botanical medicine, are natural treatments that make use of the therapeutic capabilities of plants and plant-based extracts. Due to their apparent efficacy and lack of negative side effects, these treatments have been practiced for centuries in numerous civilizations all over the world. The usage of plant parts such as leaves, stems, flowers, roots, and seeds, as well as extracts made from plants, are just a few examples of the diverse practices that fall under the umbrella of herbal medicines. Numerous consequences are linked to diabetes, a long-term metabolic illness characterized by elevated blood sugar levels that affects millions of individuals worldwide. Many cultures have a long history of using herbal treatments to control diabetes, and this use is predicated on the idea that specific plants and plant extracts contain antidiabetic qualities. Garlic, neem, coriander, ivy gourd, papaya, jamun, tulsi, aloe vera, and many other plants are used in herbal therapies for diabetes. Since free radical damage is believed to have a part in the etiology of diabetes and its associated issues, an anti-diabetic drug having antioxidant qualities would be more successful. In conclusion, herbal remedies have shown promising anti-diabetic benefits and might be thought of as alternatives to or complements to current diabetes management strategies. To assess their efficacy, safety, and the best approach to use them in the management of diabetes, more research is needed. Before beginning therapy, it is crucial to consider the use of herbal products as diabetic therapies with a qualified medical expert due to the risk of interactions with other medications and the fact that every person’s health is different. To ensure its trustworthiness in terms of both efficacy and safety, herbal products must be subjected to standardization and quality control. Keywords
