Abstract

Cow is considered as mother and even as god. It is one of the largest domesticated mammals. The meaning of the word panchagavya in Sanskrit is "five cow-derivatives" consisting of three direct constituents like cow urine, dung, milk and the two derived products are curd and ghee. Cow dung and urine are the excretory products. Cow dung is an undigested residue of consumed food material of cow combined with faeces and urine, lignin, cellulose and hemicelluloses being the major composition. Cow dung is an indigestible plant material from the intestine of cow released on to the ground. Generally, faeces, either from an animal or human is not a desired topic of conversation. Cow dung is worth discussing. It's a useful material and helps us in a variety of ways. Cow urine has been used as an antimicrobial not only for rituals but also therapeutically. But cow dung has been mostly used as a firework and/or biofertilizer in the form of cow patties. Researchers have ignored the therapeutical benefits of cow dung which is evident from the smaller number of pharmaceutical products in market amidst of its miraculous benefits. This review discusses about the existing traditional therapeutics and the respective medicinal property of cow dung and tries to change the mindset of the scientific community to carry out the further research in the future.

Development of Nicotinic Acid Controlled Release Tablets with Natural Phenolic Anti-Oxidant Polymer by Encapsulation Technique

Abstract

Nicotinic Acid (NA) is a cholesterol lowering agent used to treat dyslipidemia. Proanthocyanidins (PC) was selected as a drug and encapsulation material in which the later has a dual property of being a polymer as well as cholesterol lowering agent. The encapsulation of NA with different concentrations of (PC) was carried out by solvent evaporation technique. The encapsulated NA was converted to granules which were then compressed into tablets by wet granulation method. It was subjected to many pre-compression parameters evaluation such as flow properties, drug content and encapsulation efficiency. The tablets were evaluated for thickness, hardness, friability, in vitro release studies, release kinetics and stability studies. The evaluated parameters of the formulations showed compliance with pharmacopoeial standards. The encapsulation efficiency was 99.73% and 99.52% of drug content. The FT-IR spectrum did not show interaction between drug and polymer. The drug release in pH 1.2 was lesser than in pH 6.8 buffer. The encapsulated product released drug in controlled manner in alkaline medium. The drug release was 97.1% and release was extended up to 12 hrs. The optimized batch underwent stability studies as per ICH guidelines. It can be concluded that among all the formulations the F5 can be considered as optimized formulation. The optimized formulations showed non-fickian diffusion mechanism of release.

Abstract

Currently, the paradigm shift of folklore medicine is obvious among the public and researchers. Study based on traditional medicine around the world has become prominent with the addition of pharmacological studies to scientifically prove the effectiveness of the concerned medicine. Tamarind (Tamarindus indica L. of family Fabaceae) alone or with a combination of other herbs has been proved to be effective for treating many ailments such as arthritis, dysuria, dental diseases, ulcer, sexual dysfunction, etc. It also exhibits pharmacological actions such as anti- microbial, anti-dysentery, anti-coagulant, hepatoprotective, anti-asthmatic, and anti-diabetic. The pharmacological effect of the fruit or the pulp, leaves, flowers, kernel, and inner bark has been studied. Furthermore, different species of tamarind have also been studied. Numerous studies such as chemical, analytical and biological were conducted to confirm the same. The clinical studies of tamarind match with folklore practices with respect to pharmacological actions, still some are yet to be explored. This study focuses on reviewing the chemical composition, pharmacological effects, and nutritional effects of tamarind. Hence it can be concluded that the folklore practice and modern medicinal practice interact with each other. Thus, the folklore practices without being neglected can be extended for the support of scientific evidence through detailed researches.
