Lipotropic Activity of Natchol, a Polyherbal formulation in Albino Wistar Rats


 

The present study evaluates the lipotropic activity of Natchol, a polyherbal formulation, on carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) induced fatty liver in male albino Wistar rats. Fatty liver was induced by intraperitoneal injection of CCl4 at 0.1 ml/kg b.w. on 7th and 8th day of treatment. Natchol was administered orally at 100 mg/kg b.w. while choline chloride was given at the dose of 200 mg/kg b.w. for seven days prior to CCl4 treatment. The administration of Natchol and choline chloride was continued till 72 hours after the second dose of CCl4. Natchol treatment significantly reduced (p≤0.05) the hepatic triglycerides level and ameliorated the reduction in weight gain induced by CCl4. The histopathological examination of liver further corroborated the lipotropic activity of Natchol and it was found to be comparable with that of choline chloride, the positive control. Thus the present study revealed the lipotropic effect of Natchol in hepatic steatosis.
