Abstract

Aim of this study was to assess the effects of right lateral position of body on cardiovascular parameters. Systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure and heart rate are the main cardiovascular parameters. A total of 100 healthy male subjects were chosen for the study. Systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure and heart rate were recorded after 10 minutes of rest in supine position and right lateral position. Systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure and heart rate were significantly lower in right lateral position than supine state. The results suggest higher vagal activity and lower sympathetic activity in right lateral position of the body.

Abstract

Aim of this study was to assess the cold stress response variations in lateral positions of body. A total of 100 healthy male subjects were chosen for the study. Blood pressure and heart rate were recorded at baseline and after Cold pressor test (CPT). Basal blood pressure and heart rate were significantly higher in left lateral position while all the parameters were significantly lower in right lateral position. After cold stress test, there was significant increase in all the parameters in both the lateral positions, but incremental change in all parameters was significantly higher in left lateral position in comparison to right lateral position. The results reveal greater response to cold stress in left lateral position in comparison to right lateral position, indicating that response to cold stress varies with body posture.

Abstract

Obesity is common problem in people of high socioeconomic status of all age group. This is usually seen with reduced work capacity, early fatigability, mental irritation, dypnoea etc. Despite of good and easy availability of nutritional food , people of high socioeconomic status still remain unhealthy mainly due to lack of adequate physical exercise and overeating which leads to obesity in the family. Present study was conducted to assess the pulmonary functions in young obese medical students belonging to high socioeconomic status. Based on BMI subjects were divided in to 2 groups. Group 1 comprised of obese students (BMI>30) and group 2 comprised of non-obese students (BMI<25). Data obtained were analyzed using t-test. Inspiratory Reserve Volume, Expiratory Reserve Volume, Functional Residual Capacity and Maximum Voluntary Ventilation were found significantly lower in obese group students.
