Background/Objectives: The objective is to design decentralised PID Controller for 3x3 multivariable system using heuristic algorithms. Methods/Statistical analysis: It is very difficult to control Multivariable system is in the process industries due to the interaction between the process variables. It needs a decentrlised PID controller scheme for the effective control. Here, Ogunnaike and Ray distillation column is considered as an example for simulation. The PID controllers are tuned using using Firefly (FA) and Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) algorithm for diagonal elements of the transfer function. Findings: From the Simulation it is observed that the performance of Firefly is better than Particle Swarm Optimization for the chosen process model in terms of Integral Square (ISE) and peak overshoot. Application/Improvements: This method of controller design can be used for other distillation column (Example: Wood-berry distillation column). Different optimization algorithm can be used for controller design (Ant Colony optimization algorithm).Keywords

Background/Objectives: The objective of this paper is to design centralised controller for liquid level in the two interacting conical tank system. Methods/Statistical analysis: Two Centralised Proportional and Integral (PI) controller tuning method (Davison method and Tanttu and Liestehto method) are used for simulation and implemented in real time process. Findings: Centralised PI controller reduces the interaction between the two interacting conical tank and improves the system performance. The performances are compared in terms of Integral Square Error (ISE) and Peak Overshoot. It is observed that Tanttu and Liestehto method produces better response than Davison method. Applications/Improvements: Level control in two interacting conical tank is used in chemical industries and water treatment plants.Keywords

Turning is the machining process carried out to make cylindrical parts. Since the process is economical and the flexibility of turning operation is high, the process has become highly versatile among the industrial scenario. The design of experiments concept along with response surface methodology is used to analyze the machining parameters such as spindle seed, feed rate and depth of cut, of the turning operation. Three levels of spindle speed, feed rate and depth of cut are used as input parameters and their corresponding responses such as material removal rate (M.R.R), surface roughness, feed force, thrust force and cutting force are considered as the output parameters. The main aim of this experimentation process is to identify the optimal process parameters to get high M R R and low surface roughness. During high spindle speed, the M R R is high and vice versa. Surface roughness is high when its corresponding spindle speed and depth of cut is high. A high spindle speed, the chip formation is continuous whereas in medium speed, discontinuous chip is formed. M.R.R is high when spindle speed, depth of cut and feed rate are high.Keywords
