On the basis of structural investigations in an area of over 150 sq. km forming the western termination of the Bhavani lineament, the validity of the simple shear strain model adopted by Katz to explain movements along the lineament is examined. The model explains satisfactorily the formation of the first two of the three generation of folds recognised as well as the associated foliation and mineral lineation whereas it cannot be applied in the case of the last generation of folds.

At Marutha, located in the high-grade granulite terrain of South India, gold in association with pyrite and chalcopyrite occurs along the contacts of quartz veins with amphibolite. Structures of the area were produced during two deformational events. Gold-bearing quartz veins were formed before the onset of second deformational event. Amphibolite of Marutha, geochemically comparable with the metavolcanics of Kolar and Hutti, is derived from low-K-tholeiitic basalt and has no komatiitic affinity. Tholeiitic basalt is the probable source of gold at Marutha.Keywords

The optic direction Y in hornblende in the lower amphibolite facies rocks of the southern part of the Chitradurga schist belt is parallel to the hinge lines of the earliest folds. Shear markers and shear sense indicators from the Bhavani shear zone (BSZ), a member of the south Indian Proterozoic shear system, separating the northern Archaean and southern Pan African granulite terranes, suggest multiphase reactivation. There is a progressive increase in mylonitisation corresponding to a progression in strain. The LS fabrics indicate near vertical principal flattering plane trending ENE-WSW, but with subvertical as well as subhorizontal stretching lineations implying a possible reactivation history with opposing movement vectors. Whilst the SEM-EBSD derived LPO of amphibole, biotite and feldspars suggest plastic deformation through the activation of intracrystalline slip systems, diffusional creep accommodated deformation can be inferred from the quartz LPO. All LPO suggest modifications in the fabric due to both retrograde and prograde reactivation during the tectono-Thermal history of the BSZ over a period of nearly 2 OGa. Petrofabric-derived seismic properties for the BSZ suggest that it exhibits a considerable seismic anisotropy, which reflects the petrofabrics of hornblende and biotite. Both LPO and seismic property observations imply conflicting tectonic X and Y directions, indicating possible superposition of contrasting X and Y vectors during different phases of the shear zone reactivation.Keywords

Anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility (AMS) is investigated in samples of Peralimala (PM) pluton (ca. 550 Ma) and adjacent gneiss, gabbro, mylonite and amphibolite from the Moyar Shear Zone (MSZ), Southern Granulite Terrane (SGT) with an aim to decipher the time-relationship between fabric development in the pluton and regional tectonics. Magnetic foliation recorded in the PM pluton is sub-parallel to the WNW-ESE striking MSZ. Magnetic foliation and lineation trajectories are sigmoidal and curve into the shear zone. A dextral sense of shear is deciphered from the trajectories, which is similar to that reported within the MSZ in some earlier studies. It is inferred that the PM pluton has developed post-emplacement deformation-fabric related to reactivation of the MSZ during Pan-African age. Based on the data and existing information about regional tectonics of the area, the possibility of the (a) PM pluton being a Deformed Alkali Rock and Carbonatite (DARC) and (b) MSZ marking an ancient suture zone, is discussed.Keywords

The Bhavani Shear Zone (BSZ), part of the Palghat-Cauvery shear system of southern India, comprises a number of subparallel shear zones ranging in width from a few centimetres to tens of metres. These shear zones are characterised by progressive mylonitisation and shear fabrics corresponding to increasing strain, as documented by grain size reduction, flattening, elongation and dimensional preferred orientation of constituent minerals (quartz, hornblende, biotite, plagioclase and orthoclase). However, SEM-EBSD measured crystal preferred orientations (CPO) of these minerals are more complex and indicate interchange of maximum (X) and intermediate (Y) tectonic axes during different phases of deformation, with the minimum axis (Z) remaining approximately constant. The tectonic evolution of the BSZ and the disposition of the surrounding Archaean and Pan-African granulites are interpreted therefore in terms of polyphase deformation involving both dip-slip and strike-slip movement events in a multiply reactivated setting. SEM-EBSD CPO analysis provides clearer indication of potentially conflicting movement directions that are otherwise poorly constrained by shear markers and shear sense indicators.Keywords
