Asthma is a chronic inflammatory disease of the airway of the lungs associated with an increase in airway hyperresponsiveness leading to recurrent episodes of wheezing, breathlessness, chest tightness and coughing, particularly at night or in the early morning. About 155 million individuals worldwide and 50 million people in the developing countries are affected by asthma and in India over 11-15 million people of all ages are affected1. Nutritional anaemia is believed to be the most wide spread nutritional disorder in the world affecting 30 per cent of the world's population. It is more common among the expectant mothers. The WHO report gives the anaemia prevalence picture at global level as 55.9 per cent among the expectant mothers. In South Asia 65 per cent of pregnant women are affected by nutritional anaemia.
