Abstract

The effect of non-directive play therapy on development was examined among mentally challenged children in selected institutions of Coimbatore. The research design adopted for this study was Quasi-experimental, pre-test post-test control group design. Stratified random sampling was adopted to choose the sample. The population was divided into three strata based on the level of Intelligent Quotient (I.Q) such as mild, moderate and severe mental retardation. There was only one sample in the first strata and it was excluded from the study (mild). The second strata consist of 14 participants (moderate) and third strata consist of 2 participants (severe). On lottery method from each stratum, equal numbers of samples (8) were alternatively allocated to experimental and control group respectively. The developmental level of mentally challenged children was assessed using Developmental Delay Preschool Scale (American speech-language-hearing association 1983). Non-directive play therapy was imparted as an intervention for a period of 21 days. The post-test was conducted to assess the effect of non-directive play therapy using the same scale. Appropriate statistical technique was used to test the hypotheses. The findings reveal that there is a significant difference in the development between the experimental and control group after non- directive play therapy. Thus, the intervention was found to have an effect on the development of mentally challenged children.

Abstract

A study to assess the effectiveness of structured teaching programme on level of knowledge and practice of domestic chlorination of well among home makers of the selected urban community in Kachery, Thrissur. Objectives: To assess the level of knowledge and practice on domestic chlorination of well among homemakers of the selected urban community in Kachery, Thrissur, before and after intervention. To compare the level of knowledge and practice on domestic chlorination of well among homemakers of the selected urban community in Kachery, Thrissur. To correlate the knowledge and practice on domestic chlorination of well among homemakers of the selected urban community in Kachery, Thrissur. after. Methodology: A Pre experimental one group - pretest - post test design is adopted to the present study. We selected 40 samples through non probability Purposive Sampling Technique. Domestic chlorination awareness questionnaire was administered by interview method for assessing pretest level of knowledge. After the pretest, a structured teaching programme was given to the subjects and post test was conducted on the 4th day with same questionnaire. The data collected was analyzed by using descriptive and inferential statistics. Results: the demographic data contain frequency andpercentage distribution of samples showed that with regard to age, majority of the samples 22 (55%) were the group of 46-55 years age, most of the samples 21 (52.50%) had ≤4 members and 6 (7.50%) had only six members. Regarding the religion, most of them were 35 (87.50%) Christian and only 5 (12.50%) belongs to Hindu religion. Majority 34 (85%) of samples were unemployed. With regard to education, 15(37.50%) of samples were primary educated and 14 (35%) were secondary educated and only11 927.50%) were graduated. In the post test checklist, 100% had adequate knowledge regarding the steps of chlorination. There is highlypositive correlation between post test knowledge and practice Discussion: At the end of the study, investigation team found that the level of knowledge of homemakers on domestic chlorination of well were inadequate before the administration of structured teaching programme. The structured teaching programme was able to provide more knowledge about domestic chlorination of well, which was evident in the post test knowledge score.

Abstract

Title of study: A study to assess the impact of COVID-19 pandemic on physical, psychological, economical and social status among general population in selected areas of kachery, Thrissur. Introduction: COVID-19 has caused serious impact on every society globally. The COVID-19 caused physical, psychological, economical and social impact on general population. Objectives: To assess impact of COVID-19 pandemic on physical, psychological, economical and social status among general population in selected areas of Kachery, Thrissur. To associate the impact of COVID-19 pandemic on physical, psychological, economical and social status with selected socio demographic variables. Methodology: The study was conducted among 100 samples from selected areas of Kachery, Thrissur. The research design of the study is descriptive design and sample was collected by convenient sampling method. Tool: The tool consists of 2 sections. Section A: Socio-demographic and clinical data profile. Section B: Self developed checklist to assess the impact of covid-19 on physical, psychological, economical and social status. Results: The findings shows that, in socio-demographic and clinical data profile, 54(54%) are below 50 years of age while 46(46%) are above 50 years of age. Most of the samples 60(60%) are females and 40(40%) are males. Among 100 samples, about 31(31%) have hypertension, 49(49%) have diabetes mellitus and 20(20%) are suffering from other type of diseases. About 68(68%) of the samples belong to APL and 32(32%) belong BPL. Overall 22(22%) sample is having moderate impact on COVID-19 pandemic, 78(78%) sample is having low impact on COVID-19 pandemic and no sample is having high impact on COVID-19 pandemic. 1(1%) of sample have high psychological impact. 3(3%) of sample have moderate physical impact, 25(25%) have moderate psychological impact and 29(29%) sample have moderate economic impact and 30(30%) sample have moderate social impact. 97(97%) of sample is having low physical impact, 74(74%) of sample is having low psychological impact, 71(71%) of sample have low economic impact and 70(70%) sample have low social impact. There is significant association of co-morbid conditions of sample with impact of COVID-19. Discussion: At the end of the study investigator found that there is significant association of comorbid conditions of sample with impact of COVID-19 pandemic at p<0.05. Comorbid condition increases the impact of COVID-19 pandemic. There is no significant association of age, gender, occupation,residential place during the pandemic with impact of COVID-19 pandemic.
