Abstract
India has made a fairly good progress on the horticulture map of the world with a total annual p roduction of fruits and vegetables touching over 131 million tonnes during 1998-99. The horticulture crops cover about eight percent of the total area contributing to 20 percent of the gross agricultural output in the country'. India is the largest producer of banana in the world with a total area of approximately 4.9 lakh hectares under cultivation with a production of 16.91 million metric tonnes.
