Abstract

This paper describes the design of a simple, low-cost microcontroller based cerebral blood oxygenation monitoring device. This device is based on a non-invasive sensor that detects the blood oxygenation related to brain function. It is a reflectance based sensor which consists of IR emitter of wavelength 940 nm and ultrared LED 660nm and a detector. By measuring returned light at from the light source, the hemoglobin oxygen saturation in frontal cortex can be determined. Oxygen saturation is an indicator of oxygen transport in the body. Cerebral or regional oxygen saturation [1] is commonly termed as rSO2. There are different methods to monitor cerebral blood flow. One of them which has been recently introduced is measurement of cerebral oxygen saturation (rSO2) with cerebral oximetry, which is noninvasive [9] and easy to use. Since it measures mostly venous blood oxygen saturation and does not require pulsatile signal, it can be used as a measure of global perfusion during cardiac surgery [1].

Abstract

The aim of the present study is to evaluate the antioxidant and anticancer activities of seed extract of Solanum Virginianum. The antioxidant activity was assessed using DPPH scavenging assay while the anticancer property of the Solanum virginanum in swiss albino mice against Dalton Ascites Lymphoma (DAL).Tumor was induced in mice by intraperitoneal inoculation of Dalton Ascites Lymphoma cells (1 x 10⁵ cells / mouse).The seed extract was found to possess significant antioxidant and anticancer activities.

Abstract

The antimicrobial effect of some selected Indian medicinal plants Strychnos nux-vomica and Cassia angustifolia, were selected. The solvents used for the extraction of plant leaves were n-butanol, methanol and distilled water. The invitro antimicrobial activity was performed by agar well diffusion method. The most susceptible gram-positive bacteria was Staphylococcus and Salmonella while other most susceptible gram negative bacteria was klebsiella pneumonia and fungal species namely Aspergillus terreus, Aspergillus flavus and Aspergillus niger. The n-butanol extract of plant Strychnos nux-vomica and Cassia angustifolia, inhibit all the bacterial and fungal strains investigated. The most active extract was compared with the standard antibiotics, penicillin, streptomycin and ampicillin with 100mg disc. In the present study Strychnos nuxvoimica and Cassia angustifolia showed maximum inhibition against the fungal and bacterial organisms tested. Thus the n-butanol plant extracts could be used to control the above microbes.
