The present attempt was aimed to evaluate the Anti-asthmatic and anti allergic activity of the aqueous extract of Lagenaria siceraria leaf (LSA) using various animal models like histamine and acetylcholine induced bronchoconstriction in Guinea pigs, compound 48/80 induced mast cell degranulation in rats and paw edema in mice. LSA exhibited significant and dose dependent bronchodilatory activity at the doses of 150 and 300 mg/kg intraperitonially (i.p.). LSA at the concentrations of 10, 20 and 30 μg/ml significantly inhibited compound 48/80 induced mast cell degranulation. The anti inflammatory activity was observed at the doses of 50, 75 and 100 mg/kg (i.p.) against compound 48/80 induced paw edema in rats. These results prove the traditional claim of the drug in treatment of asthmatic disorders. Keywords

A 45 year old male presented to us with lesions in the genital area since 3 months. There was history of promiscuous sexual behaviour. He had lost seven kilos of weight during the past 4 months. Examination revealed multiple painless bumps in the genital area including ischolar_main of penis and scrotum. Discharge was present (fig-1). A diagnosis of extensive genital warts was made. The diagnosis was straight forward by clinical picture. Malignancy was not suspected based on the short duration of the lesions. Though HPV is responsible for nearly half of the penile cancers in men, it usually takes about 10 to 20 years to develop carcinoma. Though in our case a biopsy was planned but the patient did not give consent for the same. ELISA for HIV-2 was positive and CD4 count was 300/cu.mm. Patient was treated with ablation therapy and anti-retroviral therapy.- Lithostratigraphy of the Precambrian Rocks around Koira, Sundargarh District, Orissa

A group of little metamorphosed volcanic and sedimentary rocks of Precambrian age belonging to the 'Iron Ore Series' of Jones (1934), comprising lavas, tuffs, banded iron formation, shales and quartzite-sandstone is preserved in a narrow, low, northplunging synclinorium with a well defined horse-shoe closure facing south in Bonai Subdivision, Sundargarh district, Orissa. Detailed mapping carried out by the authors in the southern part of the belt (in Bonai) has thrown new light on the stratigraphic relations of these rocks. The group is designated here the Koira Group, is subdivided, on lithological grounds, into five formations.- K. N. Sahu (1942-1987)

Genetic diversity in pigeonpea wilt pathogen (Fusarium udum butler) was analyzed using 10 isolates collected from major pulse growing regions of Gujarat. The genomic DNA extracted from each isolate of Fusarium udum was subjected to polymerase chain reaction using 20 random decamer primers from OPC series. Only 10 of the 20 RAPD primers were selected on the basis of polymorphism for pooled analysis. The 10 earmarked RAPD primers selected from OPC series amplified 67 DNA fragments with size ranging from 157 to 2068bp. Out of these, 47 were polymorphic giving 70 per cent polymorphism. The total number of amplified fragments varied from 3 in OPC-8 to 11 in OPC-4. The average polymorphic bands per primer were 4.7 and per cent polymorphism ranged from 40 in OPC-15 to 100 in OPC-5. The PIC value varied from 0.64 in OPC-8 to 0.88 in OPC-4.Keywords

Background: With the inclusion of health care services under Consumer Protection Act, a spurt in litigations arising out of breach in medical/dental profession is seen. Thus, it becomes imperative for health professionals today to be aware of such laws.
Objective: To assess and compare the awareness about Consumer Protection Act among dentists (dentists in teaching institutions and dentists in private practice.)
Material and Methods: A questionnaire survey was carried out on a total of 224 dentists [112 dentists in teaching institutions (DTI)] from Manipal and Mangalore and 112 dentists in private practice (DPP) from Udupi and Mangalore, Karnataka, India]. Statistical Analysis was done using SPSS version 10. Chi- square test was used to compare between the categorical variables (P≤0.05).
Results: A total of 69.6% of DTI and 76.8% of DPP reported to be aware of Consumer Protection Act but subsequent analysis of responses did not reveal the same. Awareness (> 75%) about rules and regulations of Consumer Protection Act was found to be low in both the dentist group. No difference was seen in awareness based on gender, degree and type of practice (P>0.05). Significantly higher percentage of DPP as compared to DTI (90.7% Vs 69.2% ; P ≤ 0.05) were observed to rely upon regular consent.
Conclusion: There is a need to raise the awareness of health professionals about such laws so that their increased professional concern and practice conforms to welfare of patients.
