Argyreia nervosa Linn. (Argyreia speciosa) belonging to family Convolvulaceae, commonly known as elephant creeper, has been reported to have antimicrobial, hepatoprotective, nootropic, anticonvulsant, hypoglycemic, anti-oxidant, antiviral, nematicidal, aphordiasic, immunomodulatory, analgesic and anti-inflammatory activity.
Pharmacognostical parameters for the ischolar_mains were studied with the aim of contributing towards establishing monograph for this species. In pharmacognostical investigations, examination of macroscopical, microscopical characters, ash values, extractive values, foreign matter and LOD were carried out. Phytochemical screening included qualitative chemical examination and thin layer chromatography of the detected phytoconstituents.
Microscopical study showed well defined tissues like thick walled cork, cortex and phloem with resin canals, drum shaped xylem vessels etc. Preliminary phytochemical investigation of aqueous and methanolic extract of ischolar_mains of Argyreia nervosa revealed the presence of alkaloids, glycosides, amino acid, tannins and flavonoids which were further confirmed by thin layer chromatography. However flavonoids were found to be absent in chloroform extract and ethereal extract showed presence of only tannins. Thus the present work justifies our aim of detailed pharmacognostic and phytochemical investigation and chromatographic studies of the plant.

Recent acceptance of natural herbal medicines as an alternative form of health care and development of microbial resistance has led to investigate the antimicrobial action of medicinal plants. Present investigation is focused on antimicrobial potential of nine commonly used Indian medicinal herbs. The antimicrobial screening of hydroalcoholic extract of all the nine plants was carried out by agar welldiffusion method and broth dilution method. The efficacy of extracts has been evaluated in terms of minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) against pathogenic strains of Staphylococcus aureus (ATCC 6538), Pseudomonas aeruginosa (ATCC 9027) and Candida albicance (ATCC 10231). MIC values of individual extracts ranged between 0.4-0.9 mg/ml. MIC values of the combined crude extracts were recorded as 0.3 mg/ml (C. albicance ) , 0.5 mg/ml (Staph. aureus), and 0.6 mg/ml (P. aeruginosa) . The MIC values obtained in each test organisms were inhibitory as well as cidal values. Susceptibility of test organisms was in decreasing order C. albicance > Staph . aureus > P. aeruginosa. Thus our findings validate the use of these medicinal plants in traditional systems of medicines and their potential role in antimicrobial therapy.

Salvadora persica linn. (Salvadoraceae), a desert plant, also known as toothbrush tree or Miswak is used as tooth cleaning stick in many third world countries. The aqueous and alcoholic extracts of ischolar_mains, leaves, bark and pulp of Salvadora persica linn have been found to have antimicrobial, anti-plaque, analgesic, antipyretic, antioxidant and antiulcer activity. Since the plant is not much explored pharmacognistically and phytochemically, the present work is planned to study the pharmacognostic, phytochemical and chromatographic behavior and to establish the monograph of the plant.
Microscopy of stem showed well defined single layered quadrangular celled epidermis, 7 to 8 layers of cellular cortex embedded into which are bunches of lignified pericyclic fibers and cocentric vascular bundle, Medullary rays and pith. Powder showed presence of epidermis, bordered and pitted xylem vessels, reticulate xylem parenchyma and lignified pericyclic fibers etc
The proximate analysis showed satisfactory results with respect to foreign matter, moisture content and ash values. The water soluble extractive value was found to be the highest (25.4%), whereas alcohol soluble extractive, chloroform soluble extractive and ether soluble extractive values were found as 7.6%, 6% and 3.6% respectively.
The phytochemical investigation of the stem of Salvadora persica, showed presence of Alkaloids, Glycosides, Flavonoids, Carobohydrates, Tannins and Saponins, in the aqueous extract. The ethanolic extract of the stem showed presence of Glycosides, Steroids and Flavonoids whereas Acetone extract showed presence of Steroids and Flavnoids which were confirmed by the Thin Layer Chromatography. Chloroform and ethereal extract failed to show the presence of any phytoconstituents.

Cichorium intybus a member of Asteraceae family, is a perennial herb cultivated throughout India. It is commonly known as Chicory. It has been reported to have antifungal, antitibacterial, hypoglycemic and hepatoprotective activity in various traditional systems of medicine. It is also found to have antineoplstic, antioxidant, analgesic and sedative activity. As the Pharmacognostic and Phytochemical data on the seeds of Cichorium intybus have not been reported previously, various pharmacognostic parameters like, examination of macroscopical, microscopical characters, ash values, extractive values, foreign organic matter and LOD were studied with the aim of establishing monograph for this species. Phytochemical screening included qualitative chemical examination and Thin layer chromatography of the detected phytoconstituents. Microscopical characters showed the presence of parenchyma, single layered tangentially elongated epidermis, well defined endosperm and papus. Powder characteristic also showed the presence of epidermal cells, papus and endosperm. The total ash, water soluble ash and acid insoluble ash were found to be 9.2%w/w, 1.1%w/w, 1.4%w/w respectively. The moisture content was found to be 7 w/w. Water, Alcohol and Chloroform soluble extractive values were found to be 12.2%w/w,13.4%w/w, 1.2%w/w respectively. Preliminary phytochemical investigation of aqueous and methanolic extract of seeds of cichorium intybus revealed the presence of Carbohydrates, Alkaloids, Tannins and Flovonoids which were further confirmed by thin layer chromatography with the Rf values as 0.94,0.75 and 0.78 for carbohydrates, alkaloids, flavonoids and 0.81 and 0.90 for tannins and flavonoids respectively.Keywords

Quirivelia frutescens (Apocynaceae) also known as kalidudhi or shymlata is much branched twining shrub of West Bengal. It is used by natives as wound healing, digestive etc. However the plant is not much explored pharmacognostically and phytochemically, therefore the aim of this study was to evaluate pharmacognostic and phytochemical characteristics of plant Quirivelia fructescens. Microscopy of leaves showed distinct bicollateral vascular bundle,single layer of palisade, and well defined anomocytic stomata. Presence of calcium oxalate crystal in the form of thin pointed needle and xylem vessels with circular bordered pits were observed in the stem.The total ash, acid insoluble and water-soluble ash were found to be within the limit as compared to other plants belonging to Apocyanaceae family. The preliminary phytochemical studies indicated the presence of alkaloids and tannins. Phytochemical analysis, like TLC, UV, IR NMR, GCMS, were carried out by using the extract of stem. In TLC, the Rf value was found to be 0.77, which is near to many alkaloids. In C13 NMR, the peak showed the presence of unsaturation between conjugated carbon of alkaloid and steroid group and saturated ring substituted with aliphatic chain. GCMS study showed the presence of eight chemicals constituent in the extract. In UV, the λmax was found between 331 to 337 nm and peak indicated the presence of unsaturation.
Thus, from the above study, it can be concluded that the plant Quirivalia fructescens, has rich content of alkaloid, steroid and tannins.
