The present study aims to evaluate the effect of Ficus religiosa (FR) leaf extract on aluminium chloride (AlCl3) induced neurotoxicity in rats. Adult male albino Wistar rats were randomly arranged into 4 groups with 6 rats in each group. Group 1 was the control group, group 2 rats orally received 100mg/kg body weight of AlCl3for 25 days, group 3 and 4 comprise treated animals (Ficus religiosa leaf extract of 200mg/ kg body weight and 300mg/kg body weight (per oral), respectively for 15 days) after the initial AlCl3 administration for 25 days. On the last experimental day after FR treatment, behavioural changes were studied in all animals by passive avoidance test. Later the animals were sacrificed and the brain was removed & processed for histological study. Neuronal assay in the hippocampus of the brain tissue was conducted by staining with cresyl violet. In both behavioural test and neuronal assay, significant difference (p<0.001) was seen when control and induced group AlCl3 were compared. Similarly, when AlCl3 administered rats were compared with FR extract treated rats,significant improvement (p<0.001) was observed directing towards neuroprotective potential of FR leaf extract in aluminium-induced neurotoxicity.Keywords

Neurodegenerative disorders are the major challenges faced by the global health care system in recent years. It is a well-known fact that a number of environmental as well as lifestyle factors are responsible for neurodegenerative diseases and the contribution by aluminium (Al) plays a major role in this. A diet containing considerably high traces of Al may cause neurotoxicity leading to memory loss, impaired coordination as well as a cognitive disturbance. The present study is designed to evaluate the neuroprotective role of Pomegranate Juice (PJ) since it is rich in polyphenols that have antioxidant properties. We evaluated neurodegenerative changes induced by AlCl3 in the hippocampus of Wistar rats as well as cognitive changes displayed by them. Then compared it with that of PJ treated rats which were previously administered with AlCl3 . A significantly decreased (p<0.001) number of viable neurons were seen, in different regions of the hippocampus in the AlCl3 administered rats in comparison to the animals of the control group. However, the number of viable neurons significantly boosted (p<0.001) in PJ treated rat hippocampus. This suggests that neurotoxic changes induced by the aluminum can be ameliorated by treatment with PJ.Keywords

Retina is a neurosensory tissue of ocular system having highly unique lipids which are susceptible to free radical injuries. Chronic ethanol consumption can initiate a wide range of disorders in the CNS and also alteration in the visual system via oxidative pathway. Our study was designed to evaluate the role of vitamin D, a well-known antioxidant and neuroprotective steroid hormone, in the maintenance of ocular health in ethanol induced toxicity. In our present study 4 months old Wistar rats were exposed to ethanol, daily for 6 weeks, while another set of rats received ethanol daily, along with vitamin D for the same duration. A control group consisting of normal rats without any treatment was also included in this experiment. After 6 weeks, Total Anti-Oxidant (TAO) level of eyeball and retinal thickness was measured and statistically analyzed. We observed significantly decreased total antioxidant level in whole eye homogenate in ethanol administered rats which was associated with morphometric changes in the retina. Whereas, vitamin D treated rats showed near to normal retinal morphology as well as TAO level suggesting that vitamin D has the potential to reverse retinal damages caused by ethanol toxicity induced by long term consumption of it.Keywords
