Abstract

Several radioactive anomalies due to uranium and thorium, associated with the mesedimentary enclaves (Archaean) within granite (Archaean to Early-Proterozoic) have been recorded in parts of Karimnagar Granulite Terrain, Karimnagar Dist. At Peddur and Kottur, Uraninite has been identified in the samples of metasediments. The metasediment from these two places have been subjected to granulite facies of metamorphism and host high values of uranium with negligible thorium. In Peddur, samples of metasediments have assayed as high as 1.96% U₃O₈ with negligible thorium, and in Kottur up to 0.059% U₃O₈. Leaching studies on these samples have indicated that most of the U₃O₈ present is leachable. This discovery has opened up the possibility of finding uranium mineralisation in Archaean metasediments and thus provides a thrust for uranium exploration in similar geological environs in India. Further, the basement granite along with the metasedimentary enclaves has the potential to act as a provenance for a possible unconformity type or sandstone type U-deposit in the rocks of overlying Pakhal and Gondwana Supergroup, in Pranhita-Godavari Basin, situated to the east of this area.

Abstract

The publication by Sulekha Rao et al. entails the measurement of radiation in three areas, i.e. Gopalpur, Chhatrapur and Rushikulya along the southern coast of Odisha by deploying TLD badges in different houses and later converting the data into annual dose equivalent in terms of mSv yr^-1. The attempt by the authors to measure background radiation of certain areas and then discuss various aspects of radiation and its health effects is quite informative and appreciable. However, certain statements made in the publication, as noted below, may be incorrect and amount to misleading the readers and the public at large.

Abstract

There is no record of igneous activity in Upper Proterozoic-Kurnool/Palnad sediments. However, Igneous activity was recorded by number of geoscientists in the Cuddapah Super group of rocks in the Cuddapah Basin. For the first time the authors report the occurrence of eruptive igneous activity in the northern part of Palnad Basin,an equivalent of Kurnool Group, South of Venkataramapuram, Nalgonda district, Telangana State. The Igneous activity has affected the basal unit of Banganapalle Formation. Basal conglomerate is polymitic in nature with clasts/cobbles/boulders of dolerite, granite, granodorite, BMQ, meta-quartzite, quartzite, shale and lime stone of Palnad Formation. The average composition of conglomerate matrix (n=7) is 1.75% Fe2O3, 8.07% FeO, 3.74% MgO%, 8.07% CaO and 38.8% SiO2 which corresponds to basic igneous activity.
