Sixteen genotypes of cauliflower were evaluated to study the magnitude of genetic variability and character association for growth, yield and quality traits. The genotypes were evaluated for fourteen quantitative characters viz., plant height, stem diameter, number of leaves, leaf length, leaf width, fresh weight of leaf, total weight of the plant, days taken to curd initiation, days taken to curd maturity, diameter of the curd, average weight of curd with guard leaves, curd weight without guard leaves, vitamin C and yield of curd with guard leaves. The Present study showed that both phenotypic co-efficient of variation (PVC) and genotypic co-efficient of variation (GCV) were higher for most of the traits and indicates that characters were much influenced by environmental factors. The estimate of high heritability in broad sense was observed for two traits viz., curd weight without guard leaves and vitamin C, while the moderate heritability was observed for stem diameter. The high genetic advance in per cent of mean showed by curd weight with guard leaves while the lowest genetic advance in per cent of mean showed by leaves plant-1. High heritability coupled with high genetic advance was observed for curd weight with guard leaves which are governed by additive gene and could be effectively improved through selection. The genotypes Pusa Snowball K-1 showed high genotypic co-efficient of variability for vitamin C followed by Pusa Sharad and Pusa Hybrid-2, while the genotype K-1 showed low genotypic and phenotypic co-efficient of variability for number of leaves plant-1.Keywords

Cadmium is considered to be one of the most toxic substances in the environment due to its wide range of organ toxicity and long elimination half-life. SAMe is recognized as the major methyl-donor for essential methylation reactions that occur in all living organisms. SAMe has been increasingly utilized as a therapeutic agent in liver and neurological disorders recently. The present study has been devised to explore the alleviating effects of SAMe in cadmium induced toxicopathological changes in rats. The rats were divided into four experimental groups: group I formed the control, group II animals were given cadmium chloride @ 200ppm in distilled water, orally, group III animals were given SAMe @ 1 mg/kg body weight, orally and group IV were given both CdCl2 and SAMe. Six rats from each group were humanely sacrificed at 30th, 60th and 90th day. The quantitative data of body weight, absolute organ weight, cadmium content and oxidative stress parameters was analyzed by Duncan's multiple range tests The group II animals showed most of the pathological changes compared to the rest of the group. The magnitude of lesions in various organs was lesser in group IV where SAMe was given. The severity of lesions increased with the advancement of experiment; most severe pathological changes occurring on the 90th day. The level of cadmium residue in liver and kidneys of rats was also found to be increasing with the time in group II and IV; with group IV showing a relatively lesser increase. Similarly the evaluation of oxidative stress parameters reflected the detrimental effect of cadmium in group II and an alleviating effect of SAMe in group IV. Based on the results obtained, SAMe is found to alleviate the toxicopathological effects of cadmium in rats which needs to be further explored. Keywords

A new sisorid catfish, Glyptothorax distichus, is described from the Barak-Meghna-Surma drainage in Mizoram, North-east India. It is distinguished from its congeners in having a combination of the following characters: a chevron-shaped thoracic adhesive apparatus, with poorly developed median depression that is widely opened posteriorly by skin ridges; short dorsal fin spine; short and slender caudal peduncle; unculiferous ridges of adhesive apparatus not extending anteriorly onto gular region; absence of plicate on ventral surfaces first pectoral and pelvic fins rays, smooth skin on head and body; presence of two broad pale cream longitudinal stripes on body; and 20 + 17 Vertebrae. Keywords
